Eve Straussman-Pflanzer, Head of the European Art Department and Elizabeth and Allan Shelden Curator of European Paintings at the Detroit Institute of Arts, will speak about the Detroit Institute of Art's masterpiece by Caravaggio, Martha and Mary Magdalene, c. 1598. The Eternal City around 1600 was a hotbed of creativity with artists competing for prestigious commissions. The revolutionary style of Caravaggio's striking naturalism emerged from this epicenter of artistic activity and forever changed the course of art.
