    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

    THREAT     is a concert dance theater work that aims to provoke an interrogation of the roles we play as individuals and community in hierarchies. The work posits that hierarchies have the power to control our behavior and infiltrate our thoughts, even when no authority is present to enforce the rules. Using a physical language and soundscape that fuses multicultural traditions and styles of the West and the African Diaspora, this social exploration invites audiences into a modern narrative that speaks to the universal experience of authority, obedience, and rebellion. As a performance, THREAT employs multifaceted contemporary movement and theatricality that is bathed in an eclectic and evocative original score and set design. It is a work where orchestral strings, djembe drum, and spoken word bump into soundbites of Malcolm X, Jamaica Kincaid, Donald Trump and Fidel Castro — where new and old flags hang, representing freedom and control, safety and danger.

    Katie Leadership Impact and St. Kate’s Athletics welcome basketball superstar Dawn Staley, as the speaker for the Women of Color Leadership Speaker Series. Staley is the Head Coach of the University of South Carolina women's basketball team, and her many accolades include two NCAA Championships, Five NCAA Final Four appearances, four Olympic gold medals, and induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. As a leader in women’s sports, Staley is uniquely positioned to share her wisdom and experience in Breaking Barriers: Empowering Women of Color to Lead Through Athletics. Presented with support from Ameriprise and Securian.

    This event is moderated by Lea B. Olsen.

    The Women of Color Leadership Series, part of Katie Leadership Impact, brings high-profile leaders to share their stories of the learning and inspirational opportunities that paved their paths to leadership. The world’s need for influential women leaders from all racial and socio-economical walks of life has never been greater. Yet the representation of women — particularly women of color — in corporate leadership roles continues to suffer underrepresentation among companies. The Women of Color Leadership Series connects students with the leaders who represent the brightest hopes for meaningful change in our world, inspiring the future leaders who will go forth to transform it.

    Musical ideas, like memories, evolve over time. In both Liszt’s symphonic poem and Mayer’s symphony, melodies and rhythms return over and over, transforming with each iteration until they have become something wholly new and triumphant. While a new work by Yaz Lancaster explores when, how, and why we return to childhood memories in our adult lives.

    Join the Loft Literary Center for its first Lit!Series event of the year featuring bestselling author Roxane Gay. This conversation will highlight and celebrate the work of Roxane Gay Books, an imprint of Grove Atlantic that publishes books of fiction and nonfiction selected and edited by Roxane Gay herself. She will be joined by three RGB-published authors, Lindsay Hunter, J. Vanessa Lyon, and Kelly Sundberg, in a topical discussion of feminist literature, queer representation in books, equity in publishing, and so much more!
