PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Thirty years into one of the most storied careers in popular music, Emily Saliers decided to record her debut album.
"What's a 53 year old woman doing making her first solo record?" muses Saliers, best known as one half of the iconic duo Indigo Girls. "What compels someone like me to follow this strong attachment to rhythmic music?"
Murmuration Nation answers those questions both passionately and profoundly. In this "post-fact" era in which we find ourselves living today, Saliers' fearless voice and insightful perspective feel more vital and relevant than ever before. The songs also reveal a new side of Saliers' artistry, one that even her most ardent fans might not
expect to hear.
"It was so freeing to pursue the kind of music I truly wanted to make without regard to
what I'd done before or who I'm expected to be," says Saliers. I hope that this record can take people who think they know me already on a journey that'll really surprise them."
While Indigo Girls is still very much alive and well, Murmuration Nation is Saliers' first
release under her own name, and it's a surprising journey indeed. The record brims over
with life and energy, blurring both musical and geographical boundaries as Saliers
breaks down barriers with a bold and infectious spirit of adventure. Recorded with an
all-star band—including bassist Tim LeFebvre (David Bowie, Tedeschi Trucks Band),
keyboardist Rachel Eckroth (KT Tunstall), and drummers Robert “Sput" Searight (Snarky
Puppy) and Will Calhoun (Living Colour)—and featuring guest appearances from fellow
luminaries like Lucy Wainwright Roche, Jonatha Brooke, and Jennifer Nettles, the album
explores the kind of rhythmically centered, globally inspired music that's always held a
special place in Saliers' heart.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
"Sonderlust" is an album forged through heartbreak. After his two previous studio albums ("151a" &
"Lighght"), Kishi Bashi was at a musical impasse. “As I sat down to write songs last summer, I went to all
my usual conduits of creation: violin loops, guitar, piano, and I came up with the musical equivalent of
fumes”, says K Ishibashi. “I tried to create orchestral pop recordings that I assumed were my forte, and in
turn I found myself standing in front of a creative wall of frightening heights.”
At this very same moment of musical uncertainty, K’s personal life was falling apart… He and his wife of
13 years had briefly separated and were struggling to keep their marriage together. In his own words,
“Touring and its accompanying lifestyle took a heavy toll on my soul and my family”. As an outlet, K
submerged himself in a new musical direction. "Sonderlust" emerged as a direct result of this personal
struggle taking place at an artistic crossroads.
With the help of producer Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear), engineer Pat Dillet (Angelique Kidjo, David Byrne)
and drummer Matt Chamberlain (Morrissey, Fiona Apple, of Montreal), Kishi Bashi has created his
most personal and artistically adventurous work to date. “This album is straight from my soul. I questioned
everything about what it means to love and desire. The difference between loving someone and being in
love.”

Hallelujah Anyhow is the latest studio album from Hiss Golden Messenger, out September 22 worldwide
on Merge Records. Its ten new songs, penned by HGM principal M.C. Taylor, were recorded with Brad
Cook, Phil Cook, Chris Boerner, Josh Kaufman, Darren Jessee, Michael Lewis, and Scott Hirsch. Alexandra
Sauser-Monnig, Tift Merritt, Skylar Gudasz, Tamisha Waden, Mac McCaughan, and John Paul White
provided vocal harmonies.

I’m from nowhere. That’s the way I feel about it now, right at this moment. Music took me and made me
and gave me a purpose and I built my world with it, and now my geography is a musical one, forever. And
when I break, when I think about running as far as I can, I remember that there is nothing that does me like
music, and I might as well be a poor man in a world of my own devising. Hallelujah anyhow.
Rhythm? I learned it over twenty years in the back of rented vans, in attics and back rooms—hard places to
get to, harder places to get out of. And now rhythm is my clock and I live by it. We all do. But it’ll kill you if
you’re not careful. It might kill you even if you are. Hallelujah anyhow.
I see the dark clouds. I was designed to see them. They’re the same clouds of fear and destruction that have
darkened the world since Revelations, just different actors. But this music is for hope. That’s the only thing I
want to say about it. Love is the only way out. I’ve never been afraid of the darkness; it’s just a different
kind of light. And if some days that belief comes harder than others, hallelujah anyhow.
