PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Known for its progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, Mo Lowda & Friends started in the beer-soaked basements of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After the release of its first full length album in 2013, the trio, consisting of Jordan Caiola, Shane Woods, and Nate Matulis, began playing venues throughout the city.

After experiencing the high of multiple sold-out hometown shows, Mo Lowda took its act on the road and began consistently touring the country. Its 2016 sophomore release, Act Accordingly, was a short and sweet embodiment of the band's natural progression, refining its already formidable sound.

Following that release, Jeff Lucci stepped in as the new bassist, bringing his unique songwriting and tasteful use of effects pedals into the mix. After playing more than 100 shows nationwide in 2017, Mo Lowda is set for a full United States tour in 2018, in support of its new full-length album, Creatures.

Kirby Sybert's musical adventures have led him around the world, sometimes leading his band Kirby & the VibeTribe, sometimes solo, sometimes backing up friends, playing whatever instrument is at hand or just harmonizing with strangers in an effort to spread his message of positivity. This is reflected in his songs, which are built on hip-shaking grooves, while his lyrics portray a vast set of characters, united in their struggle to be better people in a better world.  Due to his intense focus on forging a relationship with his audience, every one of Sybert's performances is a unique experience.  It is simply in his nature; if there is a piano in a room, it will be played, and if there is a person in the room, they will be befriended. The only way to truly understand is to experience it for yourself.

The Dales is a five-piece Americana roots-rock band, carried by three part harmonies as well as a deep appreciation for classic songwriting and early country music. The band came together in early 2016 when multi-platinum songwriter Drew Lawrence (Christina Perri - "Jar of Hearts") teamed up with four of his closest friends to begin performing the songs that would become their debut album, Marie. A video of their song "Still the Love" caught the ears of Grammy-nominated producer Jerry Streeter (the Lumineers, Brandi Carlile). The song was written as a dedication to bass player Kyle Vanes' girlfriend, Heather Marie Allman, who passed from breast cancer the year before. This led to Streeter producing the band's debut album, Marie, which was released in August 2017. The Dales have been on road since then, supporting acts like the White Buffalo and Cris Jacobs. They have also headlined sold out shows in Los Angeles as well as other cities the West Coast and in the Midwest. The band has had features on NPR's World Cafe and Acoustic Cafe as well as TV interviews on NBC and ABC.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the sibling duo Ar’mon and Trey emerges with a focused, fresh, and fiery take on R&B, imbuing simmering soul with 21st-century style.

Born only a year apart, brothers Armon Warren and Trey Traylor can recall singing together by the ages of 5 and 4, respectively. By their early teens, they had started leading the choir at church in between performing in musicals and plays at school.

Adopting Vine in 2014, the brothers made show-stopping, six-second covers that generated millions of views before transitioning to Instagram in 2015. Engaging a growing fan base, they dropped the “The Same (So Gone Challenge)” on YouTube in 2016, surpassing 500,000 views in less than one month and eventually exceeding 2 million. They caught the attention of Compound Entertainment, which assumed management for the group. A few months later, the “Moment 4 Life (Mashup)” amassed more than 14 million views.

By 2018, YouTube views totaled more than 100 million and they had attracted 1 million Instagram followers. Debut singles “Drown” and “Breakdown” caught fire as Warner Bros. Records signed the duo.

Their 2018 debut EP, Long Story Short Phase One, properly introduces their soaring signature sound.

The Bomb Digz is composed of three 14-year-old boys from New York and New Jersey who seek to emulate artists such as Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and Usher.

“In today’s world, there are no musical boundaries,” says Max ZT of House of Waters, a trio that makes those words come alive as they incorporate elements of West African music, jazz, psychedelic music, indie rock, classical, and world music into their astonishingly unique sound.

The band’s touring lineup consists of Max ZT on hammered dulcimer, Moto Fukushima on six-string bass, and Ignacio Rivas-Bixio on percussion. Five years after its groundbreaking album Revolution, House of Waters now returns with its eponymous follow-up. In addition to the core lineup, the album features virtuosic cellist Dave Eggar, flautist Sam Sadigursky, and vocalist Priyadarshini.

“Our music is a constant melting pot, which is so relevant to now,” says ZT. “It’s like that last D’Angelo record or Kendrick’s [To Pimp a] Butterfly … you know, that wasn’t just rap, or hip-hop, or jazz, or soul, but it had all of that. It’s an amorphous thing. It’s how the future is going to be.”

Many Rooms is the moniker under which Brianna Hunt, an artist based in Houston, Texas, records and performs. The still-evolving project made waves in 2015 with the release of the Hollow Body EP, a collection of mostly acoustic tracks that showed promise and allowed Hunt to embark on a relentless touring schedule. As life on the road intensified, so did Hunt’s struggles with depression. This led to Many Rooms’ debut LP, There Is a Presence Here, a stunningly bare album that finds Hunt reckoning with detachment from herself, her faith, and the people around her.

Going into the studio to make There Is a Presence Here was the first substantial time alone that Hunt had experienced in a while. This sense of isolation and introspection permeates the album. Even the album’s allusions to other art—which range from C.S. Lewis to Nine Inch Nails—reference a state of bleak mental limbo. The resulting mix of cinematic ambience and striking crescendos meld with Hunt’s desperately contemplative words to make an album that is powerful even at its most fragile. There Is a Presence Here is built from harrowing times, but it is not without light. Hunt’s lyrical self-confrontations maintain hope even in their bleakest moments, showing a willingness to ask hard questions and find acceptance in the answers. With intense vulnerability comes profound catharsis, and making There Is a Presence Here became one of many steps toward Hunt beginning to find solace.

Angelo De Augustine writes and records music in Thousand Oaks, California, a suburb north of Los Angeles, where he grew up. His self-released debut album, Spirals of Silence, and three-song EP follow-up, How Past Begins, earned praise from the FADER, Stereogum, Vogue, and My Old Kentucky Blog. Last year, he released Swim Inside the Moon, his second full-length record.

The Mattson 2, a duo comprised of identical twins, has reinterpreted Coltrane's classic album A Love Supreme into a 21st century context. John Coltrane’s 1965 magnum opus A Love Supreme is one of the most revered and influential recordings in the history of jazz, widely regarded as the iconic saxophonist’s masterpiece. It might seem audacious at the very least to undertake a new interpretation of such a foundational album, but twin brothers Jared and Jonathan Mattson are nothing if not sonic risk-takers. In addition to playing it live, they are currently working on releasing this new interpretation as an album through Spiritual Pajamas. This new version translates the Coltrane Quartet’s acoustic jazz explorations into a modern language swathed in a haze of analog synths, ecstatic guitars, transcendent grooves, and enveloping atmospherics.

“The purpose of our reinterpretation of A Love Supreme was to lean into the spirit of exploration and transformation that’s embodied in jazz.” says Jared Mattson. “We don’t claim to be traditional jazz musicians, for us it’s about creatively adapting the art form, decontextualizing it, and exploring the genre in new ways. Jazz has been confined to such a narrow definition over the years and we want to make sure the genre continues to grow and evolve. It should be a living, breathing thing.”

Astronauts is one of the names under which songwriter Anthony Ferraro releases his music. In the summer of 2010, early onset arthritis closed the door on Ferraro's scholarship to a competitive piano program. He dropped out of school, moved home, and withdrew from the world for a little while. During this time, Ferraro recorded some EPs in his bedroom, innocent forays into songwriting that netted an online following and some offers from local promoters. Around that time, he befriended Chaz Bear (Toro y Moi), who became an early source of encouragement. Eager to see what he could do in a studio, Ferraro began writing his first LP with live instrumentation and full band arrangements in mind. Between stints on the road as Toro y Moi’s keyboardist, he fleshed out the demos that would become 2015’s Mind Out Wandering. Its production was precise and nakedly clean, showcasing the musicianship of his band and earning comparisons to early Bee Gees records and Philly soul.

When Bear offered to produce his next album, Ferraro began devising a collection of songs that would capitalize on the intersection of their sensibilities. The world had begun growing rapidly stranger, and he found his reference points shifting toward outsider music, Latin psychedelia, and the haunting orchestral arrangements of David Axelrod. A new voice was coming out of Ferraro, taking cues from oracular crooners like Lee Hazlewood and Kevin Ayers and delivering cryptic messages pitched far below the falsetto that had come to characterize his sound. This yeilded his second LP, Living in Symbol.

Prateek Kuhad has garnered a slew of international accolades and honors since the 2015 release of his debut LP, In Tokens and Charms, an album which prompted glowing features and reviews and cemented his status as a breakout star not just in his native India, but around the world. Kuhad earned an MTV Europe Music Award, took home Indie Album of the Year honors from iTunes, and was crowned Best Pop Artist at the Radio City Freedom Awards. He also captured first place in the prestigious International Songwriting Competition, which helped launch artists like Gotye and Passenger to global audiences. Sold-out auditorium and amphitheater dates followed, as did arena support slots with Alt-J and Mike Posner. Soon, Kuhad was traveling the world for concerts and festivals in Australia, Singapore, Canada, and France. Nike selected him to join their #BleedBlue campaign, Converse invited him to record in Rio de Janeiro as part of their Rubber Tracks series, and when he landed in Austin for the first time, NPR selected Kuhad as an artist to watch among the thousands slated to showcase at SXSW that year.

While some musicians are born with an instrument in hand, Kuhad was a bit of a late bloomer. After an initial attempt at lessons as a youngster, he enrolled in a guitar class in high school and promptly failed it. None of that managed to dampen his love for music though; he consumed as much of it as he could growing up in the small city of Jaipur. The internet didn’t arrive in his area until the end of the 1990’s, which meant that Kuhad’s listening diet consisted primarily of the Indian pop and Bollywood soundtracks that filled the local radio dial, as well as his parents’ CD collection, which contained limited Western music.

The culture shock of life in New York was intense at first, but as he settled in, Kuhad found freedom in the chaos and anonymity, and he soon discovered that the very things that made the city so overwhelming also made it an ideal place to discover himself. After graduation, he decided to follow his dreams and pursue music full time back in India. A pair of early EPs (one in English, one in Hindi) put him on the map with a sound that blurred the lines between organic folk intimacy and lush pop appeal.

Kuhad’s songs are poignant and introspective, transcending genres and borders in order to speak to the deeper truths of our shared human experience in all its messy splendor. Sometimes whisper soft, sometimes tenaciously resolute, his voice is utterly mesmerizing, often floating out over gently fingerpicked guitars or ethereal synthesizers to tap into deep wells of emotion. The music calls to mind everything from the Tallest Man on Earth to the Head and the Heart, but it’s all filtered through Kuhad’s uniquely global perspective and vivid, richly cinematic lyrics.

Most recently, Kuhad signed a publishing deal with the LA-based Cutcraft Music, joining a roster that includes the likes of Chet Faker, Izzy Bizu, and CP Dubb.

Born of a Polish father and Canadian mother, Matt Holubowski grew up in a bilingual household in Hudson, Canada, and has always lived at the crossroads of the French and English languages. The notion of the isolation of two cultures within a single territory (the province of Quebec) fascinates this globe-trotter. With his second album, Solitudes, the self-taught musician, poet, and composer offers 11 titles that evoke isolation, estrangement, and exile while delving into the forms of solitude we seek and often need.

Holubowski’s unmistakable voice and steadfast personality was revealed to some during his appearance as a finalist on the popular television show La Voix. He has since worked tirelessly, surrounding himself with invaluable musical collaborators such as Stéphane Bergeron (Karkwa) on drums, Marc-André Landry (Chloé Lacasse) on bass, Simon Angell (Patrick Watson) on guitar, and Marianne Houle (Antoine Corriveau) on cello. The resulting Solitudes sold more than 30,000 units since its release on September 23; its tour will take Holubowski to more than 80 cities.

Vera Sola is a poet, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist.

A drifter performing her own songs alone in and out of dark bars under various pseudonyms, Vera Sola has toured and recorded with a variety of artists, for a long while accompanying singer-songwriter Elvis Perkins on the road. She has collaborated on film scores and provided original music for theater and performance art.

In early 2017, she experienced a total shift in relation to her voice and musicianship, and only then was she compelled to record and release her own songs. In the days following, hiding out in a studio in St. Louis, Missouri, she wrote, arranged, and performed all the parts on her upcoming LP, Shades.

Known for the meticulous alt-pop song craft of his former acclaimed indie outfits, Port O'Brien and WATERS, Van Wlliam offers an auspicious glimpse into a promising future on The Revolution EP, his first solo effort. Always the creative force that fueled his musical endeavors, William's newfound independence allowed room to roam in fresh and exciting ways. These four tracks, a piercing song-cycle about the pain and disillusionment of lost love, have a dark, messy edge as William's consistently dazzling melodies and stirring choruses carry the emotional subject matter to striking affect. An enthralling introduction, Van William's The Revolution EP signals the arrival of a truly gifted, young artist on the rise. His debut LP, Countries, expands upon the EP and is available now.

Juke Ross is a singer-songwriter with a dusky, warm voice and an infectious spirit of affirmation, hailing from the small country of Guyana on South America's northern coast. The youngest child of 14 siblings, Ross initially sought to follow his mother, a nurse, into a career in medicine before the desire to become a songwriter took hold. Ross picked up the guitar during his med school days and began writing heartfelt, thoughtful folk-pop songs. One those songs, the breezy "Colour Me", quietly began to pick up steam on digital platforms. Not long after, he signed a deal with Republic Records in the US and, relocating to New York, began recording new material, including the 2017 single "Shadows in the Dark" by Timothy Monger.

Donovan Woods’ new album is a study in contrasts, as one would expect from its name: Both Ways. In Both Ways, Woods shows the rare ability to distill complicated situations and emotions into songs that are intriguing and relatable. Perhaps the collection’s most beautiful song is “I Ain’t Ever Loved No One,” a duet with Rose Cousins. As Both Ways progresses, radio-friendly songs like “I Live a Little Lie” and “Easy Street” employ a full-band sound to flesh out the sonic landscape.  A number of the songs are guitar-driven, yet they stop short of full-blown rock ‘n’ roll. Both Ways concludes with “Next Year,” one of five songs on the album he co-wrote in Nashville, where he has a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music.

Woods has earned nominations for both the Polaris Prize and the Juno Awards. In addition, his single “What Kind of Love Is That?” climbed to No. 1 on the CBC Top 20 Chart, while his catalog has accrued over 45 million streams. Woods is also a notable Nashville writer, with credits by Billy Currington, Charles Kelley, Tim McGraw, and Charlie Worsham. NPR Music stated, "There are very few writers who can make you laugh and break your heart in the same song.” No Depression noted that Woods’ style is “as fresh and captivating as any out there.”

A Massachusetts native and graduate of Harvard University and Berklee College of Music, Kyle Nasser has been described by Hrayr Attarian of All About Jazz as possessing “superlative musicianship as a performer, writer, and bandleader.”

Since moving to New York City in 2010, Nasser has played at many of the city's most prestigious venues (Blue Note, Smalls, Iridium, 55 Bar, and Cornelia Street Cafe), released a critically acclaimed solo album (Restive Soul), and toured in the United States and South America. In addition to leading his group, Nasser plays with and composes for the international collective Beekman. His newest release, “Persistent Fancy,” features his working sextet: Roman Filiu on alto saxophone, Jeff Miles on guitar, Dov Manski on piano, Nick Jost on bass, and Allan Mednard on drums.

Gina Chavez blends the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. A multi-ethnic Latin pop songstress, Chavez is a nine-time Austin Music Award winner (including 2015 Musician of the Year and Album of the Year for her sophomore release, Up.Rooted). Her independent album topped the Amazon and Latin iTunes charts after a national feature on NPR’s All Things Considered, and has been hailed by the Boston GlobeUSA TodayTexas Monthly, and Austin Chronicle. Her band’s Tiny Desk concert made NPR’s Top 15 of 2015.

Chavez’s passionate collection of bilingual songs takes audiences on a journey through the Americas. Her Spanish-language anthem, “Siete-D” (which took home the grand prize in the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest), tells the story of her experience volunteering in a gang-dominated suburb of San Salvador, El Salvador, where she and her partner founded Niñas Arriba, a college fund for young Latinas. The fund celebrated its first two college graduates in 2016. Chavez and her band have performed in eight countries, touring as cultural ambassadors with the U.S. State Department.

“Most striking is Chavez’s ease as she moves between social and love songs, between North American and Latin genres, and even between languages: When she passes mid-song from English to Spanish and back, it’s the most natural thing in the world.” — Boston Globe

Blanco White started as the solo project of London native Josh Edwards in 2014. After studying guitar in Cádiz, Spain, and later the Andean instrument the charango in Sucre, Bolivia, Edwards’ aim was to begin bringing together elements of Andalusian and Latin American music alongside influences closer to home. In early 2016, Blanco White released The Wind Rose, a self-produced debut EP, through Yucatan Records. A second EP, Colder Heavens, was later recorded with producer Ian Grimble (Bear's Den, Matt Corby, Daughter). Colder Heavens was released on March 31, 2017.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Jean-Michel Blais is a pianist and composer who grew up in rural Quebec. He began writing original compositions by age 11, and by 17 he was invited to the Trois-Rivières Music Conservatory. However, the constraints of formal training drew Blais off his musical course. He stopped playing piano until years later, when he rediscovered his love for music while settling in Montreal. Decidedly not limited to the keys as his compositional palette, Blais’ music is imbued with an emotional depth that belies its wordlessness. His playing and composition are poetic in themselves, with an inspired understanding of the inherent lyricism in instrumental music.

Il, his critically acclaimed 2016 debut album, was written and recorded by Blais over two years, culled from rolls of accumulated experimentation into an enchanting, unignorable arrival. The debut album would go on to amass 50 million streams worldwide, reaching #1 on Billboard’s classical chart in Canada 14 times. Dans ma main, the sophomore release by Blais, is an expansive album of post-classical piano with strands of electronic detail. Blending his conservatory skill and precise pop sensibility with synthetic accompaniment, Blais creates unique environments where the piano’s intimacy can be subtly disrupted at any time.
