PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this concert, the Greek Music Ensemble will trace the long history of Rembetiko, a World Music genre appearing in the 1900's and running through the entire 20th century. Rembetiko is a term used to designate originally disparate kinds of urban Greek folk music. Although it is now treated as a single genre, rembetiko is, musically speaking, a synthesis of elements of European music, the music of the various areas of the Greek mainland and the Greek islands, Greek Orthodox ecclesiastical chant, often referred to as Byzantine music, and the modal traditions of Ottoman art music and café music.
The concert will include popular songs of Rembetiko's main representatives: Giannis Papaioannou, Mihalis Genitsaris, Roza Eskenazi, Stratos Pagioumtzis, Spyros Peristeris, Rita Abatzi, Marika Ninou, Markos Vamvakaris, Manolis Chiotis, Vassilis Tsitsanis, and others.
The instrumentation will include a combination of modern and traditional Instruments. The performance will also include interactive multimedia, where live sound will be blending with recorded speech, movie clips, and other resources related to the life and work of the composers listed here and the history of the genre.

In honor of Lee Eliot Berk’s 25-year presidency and lifetime contributions to Berklee, this celebratory concert will feature 25 tributes from students, faculty, alumni, and guest artists.
During his term as Berklee's second president, Berk expanded the size of Berklee's urban campus, curricular offerings, international partnerships, inter-city outreach, and scholarship offerings, shaping contemporary music education, the music industry, and the arts. Alumni during his tenure have won hundreds of Grammy Awards, Latin Grammy Awards, Tony Awards, Emmy Awards, and more. Tonight's 25 tributes will be dedicated to personal stories, milestone achievements, and Berk's character and vision that helped lead Berklee to what it is today.
One of the personal tributes will be directed by Edmar Colón '15 featuring Bill Pierce '72, Greg Hopkins, Kris Davis, John Lockwood, and Tyson Jackson '19. They will perform the music of Mike Gibbs '63, whose concert was the first date of Lee and Susan Berk. Grace Kelly '12 will lead another tribute performing music by Duke Ellington '71H, whose honorary doctorate performance Berk said was a highlight of his time at Berklee. Vice President and Executive Director of Berklee College of Music Ron Savage '84 will perform a personal tribute to Lee Eliot Berk.
Other tributes will recognize academic department innovation while Lee Eliot Berk led Berklee. Boston Conservatory at Berklee student Elaina Spiro will be featured performing film scoring themes arranged by Tim Huling '98; student songwriter Kieran Rhodes will be featured performing original music; and guitar assistant chair Sheryl Bailey, and faculty Rick Peckham, Dave Fiuczynski, and Tim Miller will perform together in recognition of the Guitar Department’s important role in Berklee’s history.
The concert will also pay tribute to the expansion that happened while Lee Berk was president. The Berklee International Network was founded in 1993, and Assistant Vice President of Global Initiatives Jason Camelio and Yehuda Eder '80 will introduce a tribute featuring Rimon School of Music alumni Lihi Haruvi and Tom Oren. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this Signature Series event, we celebrate the power of gospel music with a performance by Berklee’s Reverence Gospel Choir and Overjoyed, both directed by Dennis Montgomery III and featuring a special guest performance by Bishop Hezekiah Walker, the legendary Gospel singer, composer, and choir leader. Walker is a visiting artist-in-residence with the Africana Studies Division and pastor of Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York. He is an esteemed composer whose songs have become part of the cannon of today’s gospel music. His breakthrough album Live in Toronto hit the top of the Gospel charts.
Montgomery, a virtuoso pianist, organist and vocalist, is a professor in Berklee’s Ensemble Department who has led the choir for nearly three decades, teaching students the history and characteristics of traditional gospel music and how it has transformed over the years into the more contemporary-sounding gospel that is performed today.
This concert will also celebrate the second cohort of Berklee Gospel Hall of Fame inductees. Alumna and Berklee Reverence Gospel Choir founder Ms. Lisa Harrigan '83 will be recognized, along with Ms. Evelyn Lee and Rev. Dr. Milton Biggham.
For this concert, the Reverence Gospel Choir will be joined by Bishop Hezekiah Walker in a selection of songs celebrating gospel music, and Overjoyed will perform repertoire in honor of Rev. Milton Biggham. The concert is produced by Emmett G. Price III, Tracy Gibbs, and Dennis Montgomery.
