PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The Berklee Global Jazz Institute will be celebrating its 14th anniversary with this concert featuring talented BGJI alumni and students performing original compositions inspired by jazz and poetry. The summit also will host acclaimed faculty and visiting artists, including BGJI Artistic Director Danilo Pérez alongside special guest vocalist Kurt Elling, one of the world’s foremost jazz vocalists, referred to in The New York Times as “the standout male vocalist of our time.” In addition to Elling, the concert will include drummer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington and jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano, the college’s Gary Burton chair in jazz performance.
In addition to serving as artistic director of BGJI, Pérez is a social activist, humanitarian, and leading proponent of global jazz. His music is a blend of Panamanian roots with elements of Latin American folk music, jazz, European impressionism, and African and other musical heritages that promote music as a multidimensional bridge between people.

Experience Berklee’s first-ever headphones-based concert, as performers from the popular YouTube series “Two Track” take the stage for one night only. More than a dozen Berklee acts will perform original material and covers, captured with the intimate, one-microphone recording approach that “Two Track” audiences have come to know and love.
With over 50 episodes, Two Track started as a music video series designed for Berklee’s YouTube and social media channels, featuring artists in an intimate setting with only one microphone and continuous camera takes. Each recording session revolves around a single theme (i.e., connection, love, dreams) that can be expressed by the artist either through their track selection or through a short storytelling segment that will be recorded as part of the performance.
To bring this experience to a live audience, headphones will be issued to audience members who will experience pre-produced videos based on the following themes: origins, connection, love, celebration, and change. All featured performers can be heard on Two Track recordings.

The 8-Bit Big Band is a Grammy-winning, genre-bending jazz orchestra formed around the love of video games, their associated soundtracks, and the musical desire to explore and expand an ever-growing contemporary body of music which the group has lovingly dubbed “The Great Video Game Songbook.”

They are a symphonic jazz orchestra featuring 30 of New York City’s finest musicians, re-arranging beloved music from the video game soundtracks of the last 30 years into genre-fusing, contemporary large ensemble music.

The group formed in 2017 with the release of their debut album, Press Start, followed by their sophomore album, Choose Your Character, in 2018, and their most recent release, Backwards Compatible, in 2021.

Since the inception of the band, they have garnered an online fanbase aggregating over 20 million views on YouTube and over 200,000 subscribers, followers, and listeners across the globe.

Their mission is to showcase the contemporary and ever-growing body of musical work that is video game music. In the past, people grew to love the songs of The Great American Songbook because of their experiences seeing the Broadway shows and films those timeless songs and melodies came from. In a similar way, video game music has ushered in a new era of appreciation from music lovers who grew up playing video games and learning to love the melodies from their favorite game franchises.

Within this contemporary musical canon exists a wide array of communally recognizable themes, lyrics, and melodies that can be reimagined and expanded upon in new and inventive ways, in the same fashion that the great arrangers and jazz musicians of the past century would treat other highly-regarded bodies of musical works such as film scores, Broadway cast albums, and more.

The 8-Bit Big Band draws its music from some of the most beloved video game franchises of all time, such as MarioZeldaSonic the HedgehogKirbyMetal Gear SolidFinal FantasyTetrisYoshiFire EmblemPokemonPortal, and many more, dedicating themselves to bringing large ensemble arranging into the presence of the internet and gaming era, while giving the music from these games the same reverential treatment in arranging, performance, and production that has gone hand in hand with the large symphonic studio jazz orchestras of the past century and beyond.

VIP package includes:

  • Guaranteed premium seating in designated section

  • Meet and greet with Charlie Rosen

  • 8-Bit Big Band digital albums

  • Shopping opportunity before doors open to the public

NPR Music’s Mountain Stage radio show—produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting, an on-air home for live country, folk, and blues performances—comes to the Berklee Performance Center with a star-studded lineup that spans generations of folk luminaries.
Host Kathy Mattea, a Grammy-winning country and folk artist, takes the stage alongside special guest Rosanne Cash—hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of the most ambitious and literary songwriters of her generation”—in her return to Celebrity Series for the first time since 2014.
“There’s something quintessentially West Virginia about Mountain Stage,” says Kathy Mattea, who took over hosting duties from Larry Groce in 2021. “It’s a culture steeped in humility and generosity, which makes for a groundedness, for a sense of continuity and community that I think artists are really drawn to.”
Loudon Wainwright III, Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway, and Ali McGuirk make their Celebrity Series debuts alongside Cash. For more than fifty years, Wainwright has written and performed heartfelt songs that continue to chronicle all the ups and downs of his life with characteristic wit, honesty, and humor. Tuttle, praised by Rolling Stone Country for her “expressive, crystalline voice and astounding flat-picking guitar skills,” represents roots music’s new generation and appears with Golden Highway, her brand-new bluegrass band.
Singer-songwriter Ali McGuirk, who began her career in Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts and now calls Burlington, Vermont home, has drawn acclaim for her powerful, soulful voice and songwriting that blends and spans genres. WGBH praised her “fervent blend of R&B, folk, and classic soul.”
This performance will be recorded for future on-air broadcast on the Mountain Stage syndicated, NPR radio show. It is expected to air later in December 2022.

Join an outstanding global cast of Berklee students for a unique musical experience celebrating the prolific career of singer-songwriter, bassist, activist, actor, and philanthropist Sting ’94H and his diverse and brilliantly crafted body of work as solo artist and principal songwriter in the Police, one of the most sonically distinctive, dynamic, and bestselling rock bands of all time.
Produced by Maureen McMullan ’09, this genre-spanning concert will showcase a powerful collective of singers, instrumentalists, arrangers, track producers, dancers, visual artists, and special guests, who will bring to the stage their artistry, culture, and inventive, fresh arrangements of flagship songs that continue to resonate with people around the world.
Born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner in Newcastle, England in 1951, Sting has received 17 Grammys and sold over 100 million records worldwide as a solo artist and member of the Police. A Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Sting is also a recipient of a Billboard Century Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, a Golden Globe, the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Polar Music Prize, an Emmy, and four Oscar nominations for Best Original Song. In 2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Police, and in 2019, “Every Breath You Take”—a signature song for both the Police and Sting—received a BMI Award for becoming the most-played song in radio history.
Currently on the last stretch of his My Songs Tour, having performed close to 200 shows around the world in support of his 13th studio album of the same name, Sting recently became the latest high-profile artist to sell his back catalog, in a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, comprising both his solo work and his songs with the Police, citing, “not only to connect with longtime fans in new ways but also to introduce my songs to new audiences, musicians, and generations.”

Experience a joyous evening of live music celebrating the rich musical canon of legendary American singer-songwriter, pianist,
actress, director, producer, author, entrepreneur, humanitarian, and philanthropist Alicia Keys. A classically trained pianist, the
15-time Grammy Award–winning musician exudes both originality and a faithful nod to the greats with her distinctive, soulful
vocal style and ebullient spirit. Sharing her impeccable craft for writing classic R&B love songs, jazz-inspired neo-soul melodies,
soaring ballads, feel-good motivational anthems, and funky grooves with hip-hop and electronica flourishes, Keys has connected
with a wide and eclectic audience, earning accolades around the world.

As a devoted and influential activist, Keys’s socially conscious lyrics tackle a broad host of issues, from women’s empowerment,
race, and sexuality to voter registration, the criminal justice system, and the global fight against HIV/AIDs, encapsulating why
she is one of the most important musical voices and authentic entertainers of the 21st century.

Produced by Maureen McMullan ‘09, this multidisciplinary concert brings together an outstanding global collective of singers,
rappers, instrumentalists, arrangers, track producers, dancers, visual artists, and a DJ, who will share their unique blend of
artistry, cultures, and inspired interpretations of Keys’s unmistakable repertoire. From intimate acoustic treatments to fully
orchestrated arrangements, the concert is not just the product of hours of rehearsals, boundary pushing, and fine tuning, it is an
exploration of our students’ individual expressivity, diversity, and creative collaboration.

Intermingling brand new songs with some of Keys’s signature hits, the setlist will include selections such as “A Woman’s Worth,”
“No One,” “You Don’t Know My Name,” “Heartburn,” “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” “Girl on
Fire,” “Underdog,” “A Beautiful Noise,” “Skydive,” “Is It Insane,” “Diary,” “Brand New Me,” “Butterflyz,” “In Common,”
“Superwoman,” “Karma,” “Daffodils,” “Another Way to Die,” “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart,” “How Come You Don’t Call Me,”
and “We Are Here.”

When it comes to defining the space between classical and electronic music, hardly any other name is mentioned as often as that of the Berlin-based pianist, composer, and producer Nils Frahm. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, and his sonic alchemy of ambient textures and atmospheric electronica have won him many fans around the world. Numerous tours and concerts all over the globe have strengthened his reputation as both an exceptional instrumentalist and a fascinating live musician. His albums have garnered international acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and his live shows are regularly sold out.
Following the release of his album, All Melody, in 2018, Frahm took his live show around the world on a two-year-long tour with over 180 sold out performances including New York’s Brooklyn Steel, Le Trianon in Paris, L.A.’s Disney Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the prestigious Saal 1 at Funkhaus Berlin. In December 2020, he released a concert film, Tripping with Nils Frahm, trying to freeze a moment of this journey and capture his concerts in picture and sound.
In celebration of Piano Day in March 2021, Frahm shared a new album, Graz. Later that year, his seven-track album with F. S. Blumm, 2X1=4, found him unexpectedly exploring a dub-influenced universe. In December 2021, Frahm published the third edition of his Sheets music book series and also released another solo piano album, Old Friends New Friends, a collection of 23 tracks, almost all hitherto unreleased.
