    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

In this concert, the Greek Music Ensemble will trace the long history of Rembetiko, a World Music genre appearing in the 1900's and running through the entire 20th century. Rembetiko is a term used to designate originally disparate kinds of urban Greek folk music. Although it is now treated as a single genre, rembetiko is, musically speaking, a synthesis of elements of European music, the music of the various areas of the Greek mainland and the Greek islands, Greek Orthodox ecclesiastical chant, often referred to as Byzantine music, and the modal traditions of Ottoman art music and café music.

The concert will include popular songs of Rembetiko's main representatives: Giannis Papaioannou, Mihalis Genitsaris, Roza Eskenazi, Stratos Pagioumtzis, Spyros Peristeris, Rita Abatzi, Marika Ninou, Markos Vamvakaris, Manolis Chiotis, Vassilis Tsitsanis, and others.

The instrumentation will include a combination of modern and traditional Instruments. The performance will also include  interactive multimedia, where live sound will be blending with recorded speech, movie clips, and other resources related to the life and work of the composers listed here and the history of the genre.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this Signature Series event, we celebrate the power of gospel music with a performance by Berklee’s Reverence Gospel Choir and Overjoyed, both directed by Dennis Montgomery III and featuring a special guest performance by Bishop Hezekiah Walker, the legendary Gospel singer, composer, and choir leader. Walker is a visiting artist-in-residence with the Africana Studies Division and pastor of Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York. He is an esteemed composer whose songs have become part of the cannon of today’s gospel music. His breakthrough album Live in Toronto hit the top of the Gospel charts.

Montgomery, a virtuoso pianist, organist and vocalist, is a professor in Berklee’s Ensemble Department who has led the choir for nearly three decades, teaching students the history and characteristics of traditional gospel music and how it has transformed over the years into the more contemporary-sounding gospel that is performed today.

This concert will also celebrate the second cohort of Berklee Gospel Hall of Fame inductees. Alumna and Berklee Reverence Gospel Choir founder Ms. Lisa Harrigan '83 will be recognized, along with Ms. Evelyn Lee and Rev. Dr. Milton Biggham.

For this concert, the Reverence Gospel Choir will be joined by Bishop Hezekiah Walker in a selection of songs celebrating gospel music, and Overjoyed will perform repertoire in honor of Rev. Milton Biggham. The concert is produced by Emmett G. Price III, Tracy Gibbs, and Dennis Montgomery.
