Your favorite GRS guys plus a few extra-special sidemen: Scott Sawyer and Chuck Cotton. And just maybe a few others!

2016 TBS Blues Challenge winners in the band category, GRS is a blues/r & b/roots outfit out of Durham, NC, home of the Piedmont Blues. GRS is big into the blues, but doesn’t really call itself a blues band, we just take it all in and try to put something original back out…blues, Memphis soul, Motown, New Orleans, some old funk mixed up and served out to the world-wide internet. Here we are trolling the web, seeing if the long tail has room for a humble, yet sincere Triangle roots band.

GRS is Dave Sword (drums and vocals), Dave Mozier (keyboard, harp, vocals), Chuck Taylor (bass and vocals), and Mike Conway (guitar). We’ve all slugged it out in the clubs in tons of local bands, and have been crossing paths for years. GRS grew out of jams/songwriting sessions at Dave’s place in lovely Efland, NC, and these sessions continue every week. Once we get about a dozen tunes together, we haul out the gear, and bounce between home studios to put it all down.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Five Easy Pieces presents a wide ranging mix of classic rock, ballads, blues and original compositions in a largely acoustic setting.  With four strong singers, the vocals are prominently featured.  From The Beatles and Van Morrison to ZZ Top and Sam Cooke, most any and all musical styles are represented.

Five Easy Pieces consists of Tommy Hartley on vocals and guitar, Jason Barker on vocals and guitar, Billy Belk on vocals and bass, Carter Minor on vocals and harmonica and Bakru Hunsel on drums and percussion.

Tommy Hartley has been a fixture of the Triangle music scene for many years.  His projects have included SLOWHAND – a Tribute to Eric Clapton, The Tornado Blues Band, Rewind, The Doug Prescott Band and Sutter’s Gold Streak Reunion Tour.  He brings a wealth of experience to the group.

Jason Barker has likewise been involved in many regional music ventures, including an active teaching schedule.  He was also part of The Tornado Blues Band and performs as a solo artist.  His expertise also includes production and arranging.  He and Tommy have played together for over twenty years.

Billy Belk is returning to the music scene after several years of inactivity.  He and Tommy played with the late Dave Braswell in Trickbag, a power trio blues band active regionally in the late ‘90s.  His solid bass lines and strong vocals are an integral part of our sound.

Carter Minor needs no introduction.  He has been active in many different aspects of the Triangle musical pantheon as a singer, instrumentalist, voice over artist and much, much more.  As band director and music teacher at Cary Christian School, as well as an associate minister, he lives his faith daily.  He was a member of Heartwood, Steps and many other musical groups.  Carter is a good friend, a consummate musician and we are lucky to have him on board.

Last, but certainly not least, is Bakru Hunsel.  Hailing from the South American country of Suriname, he brings an extensive knowledge of rock, jazz and blues percussion to the stage.  He was a member of The Tornado Blues Band and is currently active in Floy Doy, an eclectic jazz ensemble featuring Bryan McCune on cornet.  Bakru’s groove is deep and we are indeed fortunate to have him.

Please watch email and Facebook for gig alerts concerning upcoming events.  Our recent shows have included Abbey Road in Cary, Apex and Fuquay, City Kitchen in Chapel Hill and Durham’s premier listening room The Blue Note Grill.  Please make plans to join us for an evening of the music we love and you love to dance to.  We hope to see many of you in the near future.  Please continue to support live music and Five Easy Pieces.

Tom Merrigan's Hot Racoons Album Release Blowout, with Curtis Eller's American Circus

Get ready for a very special show! Two bands known for their phenomenal, ultra-high energy stage shows are teaming up for what promises to be one of the most cathartic outbursts of joy and outright fun of the new year.  Both bands have gained loyal followings by taking traditional American musical forms, twisting them to the breaking point and cranking up the energy until audiences are whipped into a dancing frenzy.  Alone, either band would normally be the moment that everything else builds up to.  Together for the first time, be prepared to have the roof blown off!  Finally, we'll cap it all off with a sweet lagniappe (that's New Orleans for “a little extra”) by ushering in the Mardi Gras season with a smashing New Orleans flavored set.  The bands will combine and bring on surprise guests to create an exuberantly and unabashedly booze-soaked all-star romp as the Martini Gras Second Rounders.  What could possibly go wrong?

Who really knows what happened that moment 30 years ago when Joe Bell birthed The Stinging Blades? Was it a dark and stormy night with flashes of lightnin' striking nearby, a fog-shrouded evening in the half-lit parking lot of a highway roadhouse, or  .....    There's a story there. Who's willing to tell it?

Conceived in cigarette smoke and nurtured on cold beer, the Stinging Blades are a bar band down to the marrow. Their mixture of Memphis Soul, New Orleans R&B, Blues, Rock & Roll, and finely honed original tunes all played with real feeling keeps a joint rocking. They never resort to the lowest common denominator in choice of tunes, but always try to lift the atmosphere to a higher plane while remaining anchored in carnal pelvic funk. If it’s feeling, quality tunes, and a healthy portion of Rock & Roll magic you desire, let the Blades cut off a slice for you.

The Stinging Blades will be bringing to the stage band members past and present to conjure up their unique Rock & Roll alchemy. They invite one and all to join them in celebrating 30 years of "cutting to the quick."

All proceeds from the evening will be donated to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Duke Cancer Institute for programs researching prostate cancer treatments.

Musical director, vocalist and guitarist Delaney Mcquaig transfers his expertise from years with the Buck Ram Platters and the Hotnuts to nuanced performances of precision caliber. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
While it’s hard to put a finger on any one sound that defines “American music,” the compositions of Bill Toms are as close a template as any. The Pittsburgh native, along with his band Hard Rain, delivers a sound that takes the greatest of America’s most beloved genres and melds them into a poetic representation of the best the country has to offer. With his ninth full-length studio release, Good For My Soul (street date October 27), Toms channels a foot-stomping, wall-shaking blend of soul, blues, gospel, and rock vibes, all brought together with his lyrical specialty -- stories of everyday men and women doing their best to stay ahead while still managing to keep a dream or two in their heads.

Soaring horns, gritty licks, toe-tapping rhythms, and Toms’ own rough-hewn vocals will draw listeners in, as well as well-deserved comparisons to the greats such as Dr. John, Little Feat, Springsteen, Joe Tex, The Blasters, Otis Redding, and Rufus Thomas.

“The idea of a horn section behind my songs has been something I’ve thought about for a while,” explains Toms. “Albert King, and all the Stax artists come to mind when I think of what true rhythm and blues can do. I wanted a piece of that; creating dynamics, and drama within the song; and fostering the deep emotion that a great horn section can give. The words also needed this place-- in order to be fully interpreted as the representation of ‘my America,’ and the people who make up my small part of this world.”

Good For My Soul was recorded in February 2017 by Oscar-winning composer Rick Witkowski, who also co-produced the set with Will Kimbrough (Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider). Both artists have collaborated with Toms frequently on parts of his earlier catalog. Toms launched his musical career in 1987 as lead guitarist of Pittsburgh’s legendary band Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers, During that period, he opened for and played with such legendary names as The Band, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. While playing guitar, co-writing, and adding backup vocals for the Houserockers, Toms and the band recorded six studio albums and one live concert album. In 1995, The Houserockers released American Babylon, which was recorded and produced by Springsteen himself.

As a solo artist, Toms has opened for the likes of Levon Helm, Marshall Crenshaw, Steve Forbert, and Buddy Guy. He’s plotting a string of regional east coast dates to support Good For My Soul, as well as a full European tour in 2018.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In 1987, four musicians got together for what they envisioned would be a one-time performance at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. It was a night of mostly acoustic music – sparse instrumentation with a strong emphasis on songwriting and vocal harmonies. The show far exceeded expectations, and on that March night The Subdudes were born.

Nearly 10 years later, after five well-received albums and several years of hard touring, The Subdudes called it quits. Spinoff projects ensued, as did the occasional reunion show.

In February of 2002, three of the four original band members decided to get back together. They recruited some friends, and they hit the road for the rest of the decade before taking another break.

Fast forward to March 2014, where they're giving it another go. This time it's the original lineup for the first time in 17 years, playing a few select shows.

And after nearly 30 years, still nobody in the world sounds like them.

Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist John Magnie, the Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals; their sound is also notable for the band's substitution of a tambourine player for a drummer.

The band came together after backing artists such as Joni Mitchell and Roseanne Cash, and released its eponymous debut "The Subdudes" in 1989. Like the group's subsequent albums (including 1991's "Lucky," 1996's "Primitive Streak," and 1997's "Live at Last"), The Subdudes featured a mix of covers and originals. After an eight-year sabbatical, the Subdudes joined Bob Dylan guitarist Freddy Koella to produce "Miracle Mule" in spring 2004. Keb' Mo'would be the producer for the band's 2006 effort, "Behind the Levee," and "Street Symphony" would follow in 2007, and "Flower Petals" in 2009.

The Subdudes new album, "4 on the Floor" released August 2016, captures the experience when the boys grab their acoustic instruments and come down from the stage and play in the crowd.
