PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
(Documentary, United States, Subtitled) Soufra follows the unlikely and wildly inspirational story of intrepid social entrepreneur, Mariam Shaar – a generational refugee who has spent her entire life in the 65-year-old Burl El Barajneh refugee camp just south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam as she sets out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company, “Soufra,” and then expand it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee woman who now share this camp as their home.

The evening begins with a collection of nine (9) short film selections, all in competition for the “Best Short Film” awards for the festival. These films are of varying length, style, and themes, and submitted by filmmakers around the world. Afterwards, everyone is invited to an Opening Night Reception for food and drink. And for those daring souls that want to see some more interesting, unique, and possibly bizarre short films, the “Night Gallery” collection of late-night short films will be presented after the reception (approximately 9:30pm). The ticket price includes your admission to the entire night of events.

Join us at Moretz Mills as we enjoy a full dinner (catered by Liazzo’s) and present awards for the best films from the weekend festival. The ticket includes dinner and attendance at the awards ceremony. Beer, wine and alcoholic beverages will be available through a cash bar during the evening. Doors open at 6:30pm.

The Drendel Auditorium on the SALT Block is a beautiful 400-seat facility with stage and screen capabilities. All of the selected feature-length films will be shown in the Drendel Auditorium on the SALT Block in Hickory, North Carolina between Friday and Sunday. All of the Short Film selections will be shown during a special Opening Night event accompanied by a reception.
