THE AVENGERS
In 1977, The Avengers established themselves as one of the US's preeminent punk bands. Fusing incisive guitar hooks, explosive rhythms, and adolescent venom, the group forged some of the most in-your-face songs of the era. Classics like "We Are the One" and “The American in Me” earned them a spot opening for the Sex Pistols at their final performance at Winterland, as well as a dedicated following that has only swelled during the subsequent years. The number of musicians that count themselves indebted to the sneering indictments of vocalist Penelope Houston and the eviscerating chords of guitarist Greg Ingraham cannot be overstated. The current line up includes rock-solid bassist Joel Reader (MTX) and the exhilarating drumming of Luis Illades (Pansy Division).
While much has been written about The Avengers in the past four decades, rock critic Greil Marcus puts it succinctly, "The word I always come back to is mystical, and that remains almost theirs alone."
THE BLESSED MUTHAS
The Blessed Muthas were once described as, "a gang that played music on the side", by detroit DJ Angela Woman. But, in actuality they are ordinary misfits from the same old mill playing Rock n Roll to get their thrills. The Muthas remain true to the early punk rock sounds of the 70s. Influenced by NYC punk such as the Heartbreakers, the NY Dolls, and the (NYC) Victims. Also influenced by bands like the Dead Boys, and Iggy Pop. At times their influence ventures across the pond to English Punk such as UK Subs, the Damned, and so on. Get it? Gangs don't always play by the rules.
In the last 22 years the Blessed Muthas have opened up for bands such as MC5/DTK, Nikki Corvette, Sonny Vincent, UK Subs, the Breifs, the Bell Rays, the Zeros, the (NYC) Victims, and local Philly punk legends Pure Hell, Ruin, and the Sick Kids. They continue to blaze a trail of red hot hooligan Rock n' Roll and musical mischief across the stages they encounter. So check them out! They are tighter than Lux Interior's pants!
