In the fall of 1968, Garner Consolidated, a school for black students, and Garner High, a school for whites, consolidated in the new Garner Senior High building. The merger has been called Garner's finest moment as the community unified around our children. The integration of the Garner school has been studied on the national level as an unqualified success, but there were difficult days during the 1968-69 school year. New principal Wayne Bare faced many decisions, but among the most difficult was naming a boys basketball coach and deciding who would select the cheerleaders. "68" is the fourth in a series of musical dramas about the Garner community.
