"From the rubble" we say. Well "From the #rubble" is right.
Introducing YOUR girlie show, The Dames! The founding members include performers who were involved in Deadly Sins Burlesque, Rebel Riot Revue, and Prime Rose Productions...all previous iterations of burlesque troupes/groups in Lexington's past.
The Dames are the latest chapter in Lexington, Kentucky's burlesque scene. Their namesake is an homage to Lexington's nightlife and entertainment going back to "The Dame" on Lexington's Main Street. The Dame shook the very core of this town, housed some of the best shows, and unfortunately came to a too sudden and very public end when the building was torn down with dynamite.⠀
With The Dame gone and a hole in the ground replacing it, a hole was made in the hearts of Lexingtonians who had spent their time on that block, some of which are founding members of The Dames.
The Dames are home to performers from not only Lexington, but Louisville and other Kentucky cities, creating a tie between burlesque, sideshow, and variety performance all across the state (and beyond!). We are committed to creating events that are inclusive, community-building, and ridiculously fun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our stage is open to all, regardless of skill level.
Owning on the "girlie show" instead of "burlesque" in our title (The Dames Girlie Show) is a tribute to the original girlie shows, or "girl shows", of old. The history of the girl show began long before the first light twinkled on in Las Vegas or the first floor show opened in Havana. Almost every traveling carnival between the turn of the 20th century and the early 1960’s carried some kind of girl show on its midway.
We may not be as big as a whole city block, but the Lexington Burlesque Community feels a deep connection to The Dame- not only for the shows it's had or the impact on Lexington subculture- but because our history is quite similar. One that also thought building brand new with out of town names would be better than working with the original block.
So we, The Dames, are building ourselves up from the rubble, paying homage to The Dame- a Lexington staple.
We hope to see you at our first show.
