The Start Choppin’ Woodworking series is a class series designed to give beginners a place to start their exploration of the world of wood working. In each class, we focus on using hand tools and power tools that are accessible, affordable, and can (mostly) fit in your home. Each class will complete a project that allows you to use these tools, practice and improve your new woodworking skills, and return to your hacienda with a fantastic new furniture piece!
THE PROJECT: Wooden Bench Project
In this class, you will make a simple yet elegant indoor / outdoor bench, constructed from pine 2x4’s. You will have the option of staining the wood in class, or taking a small jar of stain home to do later. The bench measures approximately 4’ Width X 18" Height X 10.5" Depth, and weighs approximately 12 lbs. Each student will leave with one wooden bench, stain (if applicable) and a resource guide that covers the tools, concepts, and recommendations covered in the class.
TOOLS & SKILLS
- general safety procedures
- identifying and selecting wood
- cutting with a compound miter saw
- assembling wood pieces with a nail gun
- using a power drill and identifying different drill bits
- sanding with a power sander
- staining & sealing wood properly
PLEASE NOTE: This class is great for total beginners with zero woodworking experience, as well as intermediates who simply like the project and/or feel a little rusty and want to get back into the craft. Our classes are more lo-fi and intended to feel accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject and desire to learn!
Supplies Needed: None. You will be working in an environment with sawdust and wood stain, so please dress accordingly. Do not wear open toe shoes or sandals. Boots or tennis shoes are recommended. We will supply gloves, goggles, dust masks, and aprons as necessary.
The rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy - this includes cancellation, re-books, gift certificates, moving classes, etc. For more information on canceling a class, please read our cancellation policy. All classes are 21+ unless you email for permission. If any questions, please email us at info AT workshopsf DOT org.
