In this next level sewing class, we will show you how to construct a more advanced bag with sleek, classic features and leather handles. This durable bag is inclusive of all genders, and is ideal for the beach, trips to the river, camping, shopping, or just as your every day ride-or-die bag! Over the course of this 3-hour class, you will work on bag construction techniques, including adding a lining, reinforcing the bottom of your gusseted bag, making box corners, creating a key toggle / clip, and riveting heavy duty leather straps. You will also have some customization options for this bag, including:
- choice of medium weight canvas (denim, natural, army green, black, or prints)
- style of cotton lining (we’ll have a variety of prints and fun patterns)
- choice of rivets and hardware (silver, antique brass, or shiny brass)
- choice of leather handle colors (black, brown, or natural)
Please note that the fabric for this class will be pre-cut ahead of time so you can focus on sewing and construction skills. However, there will be a demonstration on how to cut a bag pattern so that you will understand how to do this for other projects. Each student will leave with one ready-to-use canvas bag, as well as some intermediate bag construction knowledge to tackle additional bag-making projects!
In order to attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class.. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.
Hayley has been sewing since the tender age of three. Past work includes bags, animals, clothing, pillows, art rolls, more patches than you can imagine, quilts, costumes, and tool rolls for motorcycles. Feel free to pick her brain on all things sewing-related or WorkshopSF-related! If she doesn’t have the answer you’re looking for, she’ll work with you to figure out what that answer may be!
