We are so honored and thrilled to be bringing back Fin de Cinema, our longstanding live film score series curated by Holocene talent buyer Gina Altamura, after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic.
For this edition, we are presenting the gorgeous and surreal vampire cult classic Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970).
Just as we are returning to life and to gathering after months of isolation, and finding things the same, yet different - So too do we return to Valerie and her fantastical world, where things are never quite as they seem -
We presented this film back in 2009, as one of the first in the series, and return to it now years later, with a new set of sonic interpretations, in a re-imagined live soundtrack by three visionary sets of artists / composers:
Pianist Akila Fields (aka Palm Dat) collaborating with saxophonist Noah Bernstein (both members of Shy Girls)
Yaara Valey, vocalist and soundscape artist
Derek Hunter Wilson, playing synth, viola and piano
With Valerie, we enter the realm of fairy tale, which resists literal interpretation. But we would offer up that this cinematic marvel and its rich symbolism explores themes of our personal and collective Shadow, the dangers and harm of patriarchy and dogma, and the feminine spirit which practices intuitive ways of knowing.
