Brush Pen Calligraphy Fundamentals

In this beginner brush pen calligraphy workshop, instructor Surbhi Aggarwal will guide you through the fundamentals of using brush pens to develop your own unique calligraphy style! Class begins with foundational techniques, such as the correct way to hold the pen, maintain proper posture, and perform essential warm-up exercises. Each student will receive brush pens, a handmade name card, watercolor sheets for creating their final class project, and a comprehensive brush calligraphy workbook. The workbook provides a thorough guide, covering basic strokes, lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and words, with plenty of practice space for use during and after the workshop.

Throughout the session, students will gain an understanding of brush calligraphy fundamentals as they start to discover and develop their own unique lettering style. Students will explore advanced techniques like 3D lettering to add dimension to their work, as well as faux calligraphy, which enables them to create calligraphy on any surface using various tools. Surbhi will also demonstrate different types of brush pens, inspiring participants to continue their practice and calligraphy exploration long after the class ends! Each student will leave with a set of two Tombow brush pens, cardstock, and their workbook to continue their brush calligraphy practice at home.

Supplies Needed: None. All pens and paper are included.

Instructor Bio: Surbhi Aggarwal is a skilled calligrapher with over five years of experience mastering a wide range of scripts, including Modern calligraphy, Copperplate, Spencerian, and Italic. She has a special relationship with brush calligraphy due to its versatility and the joy it brings her in teaching. In addition to her work on paper, she extends her craft to customizing items like engraving perfume bottles and personalizing wine or champagne flutes. With a deep passion for teaching, she has guided over a thousand students in discovering the therapeutic and creative joys of calligraphy.
