Toni Tupponce
Toni Tupponce is Program Director for A Sign of the Times of the Carolinas, the 501 (C) 3 organization dedicated to improving our community through productions and programs that reflect the heritage of African Americans and performs as the Lead Vocalist for A Sign of the Times Band.
Retired after a 30-year career in local government Toni is President of Tupponce Enterprises II, Inc., a Charlotte-based consulting firm that provides organizational and leadership development as well as facilitation services to non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions and community organizations.
Her love of music and her belief in the possibilities of “community” are life long. She began to understand issues of diversity early as the first black child to desegregate the parochial school in her hometown in the late 1950’s. She came to believe in the possibility of people transforming their definition of “community” through experiences during the Civil Rights era, educational and career challenges and her time working in Charlotte’s Neighborhood Development Department.
Born in West Point, Virginia, Toni has had a long performing career. She began singing at an early age and was active in choral groups and in dramatic arts throughout high school and college. She has been the lead vocalist with bands in Durham, Winston-Salem and Charlotte. She began singing with A Sign of the Times in 2001. She’s opened for Grammy winning vocalists Jane Monheit and Jennifer Holliday; was a featured artist at Charlotte’s Ritz Carlton Hotel from 2010 – 2013 and has performed to standing room only audiences for Jazz at the Bechtler Museum of Art and the Sun Set Jazz Festival in Frederiksted, U.S. Virgin Islands as well as venues in Southern Ireland.
The Charlotte Magazine named her “One of Charlotte’s “50 Most Interesting People” in 2004 and “The Sexiest Voice in Charlotte” in 2006. Her discography includes: Grayson Warren Brown’s Been So Busy, 1987; All About Love, 2004; Connections, Too 2003; Ascension, 2006 and Just Friends, 2007. Her new work with A Sign of the Times of the Carolinas, a program called “LISTEN”, fulfills her dream to bring her music and her love of community together…for good!
