Look, bodies are all different -- and it’s rare to take something off the rack and have it fit you perfectly. So, in this Sewing 102 class, you will build on the basic sewing skills learned in our Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp in order to make your very own, perfectly fitted work shirt, Kramer shirt, or even a puffy shirt!
Though basic sewing skills are required for this class, no prior knowledge of garment construction is necessary. You’ll learn to make all the necessary parts of the shirt, including a collar, shirt sleeves, front pocket, snaps, and French seams. We will show you how to do the entire garment construction process using a single needle basic machine and your bare hands! We’ll demo how to cut out a garment with a commercial pattern, but actual fabric for this project will be pre-cut prior to class. You will select your shirt fabric and size once you get here. The shirt options include four unisex patterns in black, denim, chambray, and a rotating seasonal print. And don’t worry: All of our fabrics are handpicked and selected for ease of sewing, so no silk or complicated fabrics!
The base patterns we use are Kwik Sew #k3422 and Kwik Sew #k3555. A few of the sizes offer a slimmer waist and shorter hem. We are offering the shirt in xs-xxl. If you’re at all concerned with not falling within that size range, let us know and we can custom pattern a shirt to fit your needs. This is a size inclusive class and no one will be turned away.
Prerequisite: In order to attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.
Supplies Needed: None
