“I DIDN'T SEE MYSELF AS A WOMAN DOING FILM BUT AS A RADICAL FILM-MAKER WHO WAS A WOMAN.” AGNÈS VARDA

Holocene, POW Film Fest, and the artists behind Agnès Varda Forever have commissioned very talented local musicians, EMA and Kathy Foster (performing with Rachel Blumberg), to create an original score to accompany a screening of Varda’s film La Pointe Courte. Released in 1955, La Pointe Courte is considered the first film of the French New Wave movement, and Varda the "mother" of the French New Wave.
La Pointe Courte was her first feature, made when she was 26 years old. Like many contemporary female artists, she self-funded the film.

Fin de Cinema is a recurring live film score series curated by
Gina Altamura of Holocene. This series, established in 2009, allows visionary local pop and experimental musicians to reinterpret the soundtracks to classic art films. Fin de Cinema has been presented at Holocene and as part of PICA’s Time Based Art Festival, and in collaboration with community partners such as POW Film Fest and Church of FIlm.

Agnès Varda Forever: Two artists (Laura Glazer and Jennifer Jones) publicly declare their admiration for an iconic female filmmaker by hanging 500 posters all over Portland that declared “Agnès Varda Forever,” sparking increased interest in her work and a festival of her films in 2021.

POW Film Fest is Portland’s premiere film festival showcasing the work of women and non-binary directors. Now in its 15th year, the festival features some of today’s top directors, while honoring the true pioneers and recognizing the next generation of leading filmmakers. POW was created, in part, to celebrate women in their quest to thrive and grow in the film industry.

Erika M. Anderson is a musician and multimedia artist. She grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and currently lives in Portland. After releasing her debut album, EMA was named "New Band of the Day" by The Guardian and "Artist to Watch" by Rolling Stone.

Regarded as a pillar of the Portland music scene, Kathy Foster rose to prominence as the bassist for The Thermals for over 16 years. Her current project, Roseblood, is a four-piece band with Foster laying down all the vocals and instrumentation herself. In addition to her work as a musician, Foster is also a radio and live DJ in the Rose City.
