University Chorale Premiere: "Standing at the Beam"
Doors Open: 7:30 PM
This performance marks the world premiere of “Standing at the Beam,” a piece intended to honor the courage and resilience of survivors of Larry Nassar’s crimes and all survivors of sexual violence in our community. Composed by Andrea Clearfield with poetry written by Charles Anthony Silvestri, the Edward D. Anderson Choral Scholars Fund for the University Chorale commissioned the piece with the hope that it might contribute in some small way to the healing and growth of survivors.
The concert program also includes John Corigliano’s setting of “Fern Hill”—a poem by Dylan Thomas that describes the loss of the innocence of youth—and two 18th-century settings of the psalm “De Profundis” (Out of the depths I cry out to you, Lord).
Conducted by David Rayl.
There will also be a post-performance conversation for those in the audience who wish to participate. A panel that includes the composer, the poet, and Grace French, founder and president of The Army of Survivors, will engage in a discussion moderated by Dr. Rebecca Campbell, MSU Professor of Psychology, whose research focuses on violence against women and children, with an emphasis on sexual assault.
