Too often we think in terms of destinations, seeking out fixed points in a world constantly smacking us with its impermanence. Given our physiology, we can't be blamed for the urge. Yet when listening to Chicago based Newt., it's clear they exist as much more wave than particle.
Newt. (Tony Piazza and Jack Willson) can be gentle and strange, opining in the lineage of Judee Sill, Julia Holter, or Sun Kill Moon. They can wield a brand of dark and psychedelic electro, with whiffs of Trip-Hop's more esoteric edges. They similarly find themselves at home on the abrasive ends of the sonic spectrum, paying homage to free jazz and noise pioneers through their improvisational approach to performance.
Both Piazza and Willson are graduates of the Columbia College Jazz Studies program. While they've left the academic rigor behind, this formal training seeps into their cinematic arrangements, which weave disparate, electro-acoustic collages into cohesive works of fresh and ever shifting music.
