An Afternoon of Conversation and Music with Bonnie Koloc
In 1968, Bonnie Koloc took the midnight train from her small town in Iowa to Chicago where she immediately became a sensation on the city’s burgeoning singer-songwriter scene. Alongside peers John Prine and Steve Goodman, Bonnie helped thrust Chicago into the national spotlight through a series of successive records recorded in Chicago, Nashville, and Los Angeles, and a following that led to sold-out shows wherever she played. She transitioned to Broadway in the 1980s and then a flourishing career as a celebrated visual artist.

Bonnie turned 80 in February and she arrives at the Hideout to talk about her long career in Chicago with journalist Mark Guarino, author of Country and Midwestern: Chicago in the History of Country Music and the Folk Revival. She’ll revisit many of her records and perform selections from her early catalog. Come hear one of the landmark voices of Chicago music history!

Country and Midwestern is series of events culminating in the centennial of the WLS National Barn Dance and inspired by Mark Guarino’s Country and Midwestern: Chicago in the History of Country Music and the Folk Revival (University of Chicago Press, 2023).
