Written and produced by playwright Charley-John Smith, That Long Tobacco Road is taking the stage of McGregor Hall after being noted as the longest running performance at Louisburg College in Franklin County. Performed and produced by local talent of the region, That Long Tobacco Road tells the story about a North Carolina family of tobacco farmers struggling to harvest their crops in the early 1940s. Beset by natural disasters, human errors and a vindictive opponent, the Sturdivant family finds itself in danger of losing their farm. The farm and a small mom and pop type country store, mortgaged because of the previous year’s crop failures, have been put up as collateral for the impending debt. The musical takes an suspenseful turn after one of the sons is killed during a robbery at the store and barns on the farm are set on fire. Charley-John Smith designed the Norris Theatre at Louisburg College and served as a theater consultant for the North Carolina Division of Cultural Resources.
