Hailed by critics as the first truly "American Opera", and winner of the very first Tony Award for Best Original Score (1947), Street Scene mixes comedy, romance, and tragedy within a single New York City tenement. The score features jazz, Broadway show-stoppers, and full-throated verismo lyricism. Kurt Weill's Street Scene is considered the first real successor of the Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, but it actually garnered more favorable reviews and enjoyed a longer Broadway run!
