Stretching along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula is the beautiful waterfront promenade known as the Battery, named for a Civil War defense artillery battery at the site. The Battery sea wall was built in the early 19th century on the higher part of the promenade to facilitate the creation of East Battery Street and White Point Garden at the southern tip of the peninsula. Some of Charleston's largest and most stately antebellum residences are found here. Many of these houses were built as summer homes, lived in as many wealthy residents came into the city from their plantation homes for summers and special occasions. This tour gives access to the interiors of these private homes.
