Biography:
For over a decade the Seattle based duo Bad Luck (Neil Welch, saxophone/electronics and Chris Icasiano, drums) have pushed the boundaries of what it means to perform, create and move forward in the genre of modern jazz. With four albums under their belt, Bad Luck has created an incredibly diverse array of music — no small feat in the heavily trodden world of drum/saxophone duos. They have developed a unique performative language together, sculpting compositions that use complex mnemonic techniques, and create "fearless, raw improvisations" (Seattle Times).

Bad Luck formed out of late night drum and saxophone marathon sessions exploring Coltrane/Rashied Ali style duos and jazz standards while students together at the University of Washington. Since that time they have come to embody a wide range of styles with incredible artistic growth as a band. They gained recognition early on, being named “Outside Jazz Group of 2011” by Earshot Jazz Magazine, with their album Two was named “Album of the Year 2012” by the New York Jazz Review. The duo has emerged as one of Seattle's most lauded experimental projects of late, with genre-melting collaborations with dancers, mc's, and visual artists in genres far and beyond the realm of jazz music. Bad Luck is also committed to performing on gender-diverse bills, with a wide range of genres represented at each show.

Newaxeyes is a Seattle quartet merging texture-rich electronics and shapeshifting out-rock to refract the paranoia, volatility, and catharsis of the present. “A bracing fusion of samples, doom-y squalls, and caustic beats” through the prism of synth/sampler manipulators Jordan Rundle, Bret Gardín, and guitarists Tyler Coray and William Hayes. “Their sound is a bleakly post-modern collage of influences and inferences, always threatening to unspool, but kept together through artful stitching and bloody-minded purpose.” – Kyle Fleck, The Stranger

Sassyblack is a space aged singer/songwriter & producer based in Seattle, Washington. This Goddess of “electronic psychedelic soul” & “hologram funk” explores the concepts of sound through deep compositions. With roots in classical & jazz, her voice is often compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Erykah Badu & Georgia Anne Muldrow. Her production value and creativity is reminiscent of Roy Ayers, Pharrell & Herbie Hancock.

Zen Mother is the hive mind of Wolcott Smith (Invisible Hand, The Growlers) and Monika Khot (Nordra, Invisible Hand). They formed the project after trading avant-garde secrets, and quickly decided to weave those secrets together into a heavy, electronic-rock based duo. The music is dynamic in nature, lending itself to sonic focus and harnessing control of the mind. Industrial harshness is paired with ambient beauty all alongside the ever-pervasive feeling of torment. Influences include This Heat, Igor Wakhevitch, Blonde Redhead, and Swans. Dave Segal of The Stranger writes "...you can hear ZM striving for those great musicians’ sonic manifestations of baroque, angular torment in its most exquisite forms." The duo has recently expanded to a quartet. The project has added Raymond McCoy IV (Charms, Crypts) on drums, and Will Smith on cello.
