Gumbo Stories: A Black History Celebration Concert

Through historical stories from the birthplace and blending of diverse musical traditions in New Orleans, Gumbo Stories presents a range of music from second line to congregational to jazz and bounce. Hosts Emmett G. Price III and Abria Smith will introduce these genres, lead by department chairs and faculty experts Tanya Darby, Mila Thigpen, Dennis Montgomery, Godwin Lewis, Winston Maccow, and Queen D. This concert will celebrate Black music from New Orleans and its pedagogical and cultural importance today.

This event is co-sponsored by Berklee’s Black History Celebration Committee, Ensemble Department, Africana Studies Center, Brass Department, Office of External Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion team, and the Office of Community and Governmental Relations.
