Popular NCMA lecturer and art educator Joseph Covington covers 5,000 years of art history. “From Pyramids to Pixels.” Topics include the great masters, African art, the Islamic world, photography, and new media.

This lecture will combine discussion of movements in recent art in which artists began to explore and raise questions about art itself, its subject, materiality, and relation to everyday life. Pop Art was a critique of the newly media-saturated age of the 1950s, and challenged notions of fine art by appropriating media imagery and other popular culture material. Minimalism and Conceptual Art sought to dispute ideas of the individual artistic vision, boundaries of the art object, and the traditional primacy of form over idea.
