Self-Guided Tour of Create to Free Yourselves: Abraham Lincoln and the History of Freeing Slaves in America
This is your chance! Experience a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration as President Lincoln’s Cottage is transformed by award-winning sculptor and found-object artist, Georges Adéagbo. Born in Cotonou, Benin, Georges is known worldwide for his site-specific found-object installations. This winter he will be making a rare appearance in the US, exploring themes of freedom and bondage in the home where Abraham Lincoln developed the Emancipation Proclamation.
In vignettes throughout the Cottage comprising sculpture, assemblages, and handcrafted signage, this groundbreaking month-long exhibition, Create to Free Yourselves: Abraham Lincoln and the History of Freeing Slaves in America, will pay homage to Adeagbo’s lifelong interest in President Lincoln. Notions of identity, African Diasporan heritage, and reflection are integral to Adéagbo’s work, and it promises to deepen our understanding of both Lincoln and what it means to turn history into action.
