Dawn Anthony
Dawn is a North Carolina-based singer, music educator, author, and playwright. She engages in artistic collaborations to build bridges across cultures, languages, and generations. Born in Philadelphia, but raised in Georgia, she considers herself a northerner with a southern heart. Singing everything from jazz, blues, Motown, and musical theater to gospel – she thrives on making connections with others beyond the words and notes on the page.
Dawn earned her degree in music from Queens University of Charlotte and pursues her love of learning, performing, and teaching through cultural exchange. She has partnered with her alma mater for “Creative Crossroads;”an artist-in-residence concert and lecture series about the Harlem Renaissance; expressed through music, poetry, dance and visual art. Her children’s musical, The Gift Way Up in the Closet, premiered at the Fullwood Theater in Matthews, North Carolina in 2019. It is based on her children’s book of the same name and was honored with co-collaborator, S. Kristi Douglas, to receive Best Short Play for Atlanta’s Black Theater festival in 2020. Anthony currently collaborates with Greg Jarrell in a project entitled A Riff of Love; a program that interweaves music, stories, and the visual art of Helms Jarrell. This evolving program aims to inspire listeners and participants to create an atmosphere of justice and belonging.
