South Philly’s Grocer demands context and attention now more than ever: listen to just one song off their new album Numbers Game or wander away mid-set to smoke a cigarette, and you’ll completely miss what they’re about. Featuring three distinct lyricists/vocalists, Grocer is a band that grooves, but never quite settles; a group that emphasizes melodic immediacy, yet always remains moments away from chaos. Numbers Game is full of these tricks, nods, and winks as the band rearranges the puzzle pieces of 90s rock into something utterly their own.

Dogs at Large

Since the mid-2010s, Chicago outfit Dogs at Large has been creating “languid, Americana-inflected indie rock,” as described by the Chicago Reader. Led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sam Pirruccello, the group’s discography features a shifting mosaic of collaborators and songs inspired by Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Judee Sill, and George Harrison. The sonic palette of Dogs at Large is diverse, informed by Pirruccello’s desire for experimentation and to never stagnate. For instance, Delusions of Paradise (2019) is a wall of sound approach to country-rock and Americana, while Jeopardy (2020) is a back-to-basics guitar record featuring almost no overdubs and quickly captured performances. The sonic palette of Dogs at Large seems to change with each release, but Pirruccello’s distinct vocal delivery and reliably strong songwriting give each song a sense of place.

Between sweeping pop melodies and a series of jumpsuits traded between Bailey Minzenberger (drums), Luke Stamos (bass) and frontman Niko Kapetan, this high drama, heavy show is a force to be reckoned with. In Burnout Beautiful, a kaleidoscopic collection of demos written throughout his late adolescence and recorded entirely in the basement of his childhood home, Kapetan faces the tough stuff with equal parts brutal honesty and theatrics. Unafraid of dualisms, an old soul documenting his coming of age story through thrashy guitar and Leonard Cohen-esque lyrical realism. Friko is set to release their debut EP in early 2022.
