Doors Open: 10:45 AM
PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS TAKES PLACE AT WORKSHOPSF’S SECOND LOCATION IN UPPER HAIGHT AT 1310 HAIGHT STREET b/w CENTRAL AND MASONIC.
The Start Choppin’ Woodworking series is a class series designed to give beginners a place to start their exploration of the world of wood working. In each class, we focus on using hand tools and power tools that are accessible, affordable, and can (mostly) fit in your home. Each class will complete a project that allows you to use these tools, practice and improve your new woodworking skills, and return to your hacienda with a fantastic new furniture piece!
THE PROJECT: Floating Shelves Project
In this class, you will build your own set of floating shelves! These shelves will mount to your walls, and are great for displaying frames, books, vases, and more. You will build both the mount and the frame for each shelf. Once you have cut your wood and assembled your shelves, you will sand, stain, and finish them in class to complete the look that you want! There will also be a short lesson on how to mount your shelves once you get home. Similar floating shelves of this quality sell for as much as $65-$95 per shelf! Each shelf is made from high quality poplar wood, measures approximately 24" width X 7.25" depth X 3.25" height, and weighs 3.5 lbs. Each student will leave with two floating shelves + mounts, as well as a handout that covers the tools, concepts, and recommendations covered in class.
TOOLS & SKILLS
- general safety procedures
- understanding a "cut list"
- cutting with a compound miter saw
- using a nail gun and wood glue
- using a pocket jig, power drill, and drill bits

- using a level and dry wall anchors for mounting
PLEASE NOTE: This class is great for total beginners with zero woodworking experience, as well as intermediates who simply like the project and/or feel a little rusty and want to get back into the craft. Our classes are more lo-fi and intended to feel accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject and desire to learn!
