Illegal Son
Torn between birthright and belonging, trombonist Denzel Mendoza tackles the disparity of what it means to be an Undocumented Musician as Illegal Son. Mendoza is a FIlipino National brought forth from Singapore, raised in Las Vegas, NV, educated in NYC's The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music, and is currently based in Portland, OR. Having lived in this country for 21 years, Mendoza has pursued a completely American lifestyle, from starting his own family, touring across the country, and even winning a Grammy for his contribution in John Daversa's 2019 Album "American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom"; however, on paper, he is far from American. He is Undocumented, a DREAMer, and proud of it.
Illegal Son is an interpretation of the Undocumented way of life through Sound and Music, it's insecure, it's unstable, but hopeful. To process life under the umbrella of being Undocumented one must understand the consistency of improvisation on a day to day basis, a constant worry of what's next.
Trombone, Upright Bass, and Drums are the foundation of Illegal Son.
