Witness spectacular scenic vistas, lush vegetation, eastern hardwood forests and mountain streams as you descend into the gorge before stopping at Barthell Coal Camp. During your trip down, our live narration will showcase many points of interest along the way as well as answer any questions you may have. Upon your arrival at Barthell, you will have approximately 2 hours to partake in both the guided tour of what was previously Stearns Company Mine 1* or a guided town tour which will showcase several other points of interest including what was once the Barthell Company Store, old schoolhouse, and doctor's office. Guided Mine tour is an additional purchase, guided town tour is free.
Don’t forget to stop in McCreary County Museum as each train ticket comes with complimentary admission. McCreary County Museum is now housed in what was previously Stearns Coal & Lumber Company Corporate Headquarters. Here you will find an abundance of history and artifacts showing what life in the Stearns community was like.
Concessions & restrooms are available on site upon your arrival at Barthel. Dogs are not permitted on the guided mine tour however are allowed on the property. Please contact (606) 376-8749 during operating hours for more information as Barthell Coal Camp is privately owned and operated by the Koger family, we have minimal information on day-to-day operations.
