Does it really make sense to own a personalized set of leather drink coasters, made from the finest of USA certified cowhides, when all they’ll do is ensure your Tecate cans and bourbon glasses don’t leave moisture stains on your cheap chipboard coffee table? Does that sound like overkill...? Well, we at WorkshopSF happen to LOVE us some Overkill, and think customized leather coasters would be a FINE addition to your living room accessories stash!
In Beginner’s Leatherworking: Stamp and Dye Leather Drink Coasters, Jennifer Laursen, a professional leatherworker and owner / designer for Tilt Leather, will teach you to use common leatherworking tools to produce your own set of leather coasters! You will learn how to use tools such as mallets, rotary punches, and rivet setters to produce four coasters and a leather caddy that can hold them all together when not in use. Jennifer will show you how to use alphabet letter stamps and design stamps to create intricate, decorative patterns on your coasters. You will also use antique stain to add some color. Jennifer will explain the benefits of using vegetable tanned leather, as well as offer a guide on good leather care. Everyone will leave class with their own set of four coasters, a leather caddy, and working knowledge of the tools and techniques necessary to stamp and create more leather goods at home!
Supplies Needed: None, but don’t wear your Sunday best since we will be working with stains.
