John Burstein revives the role of Clarence Darrow for 2 performances only, as the widely acclaimed "Darrow" returns to the mid-coast this July.

Writes Dagney Ernest of the Free Press: The play, by David Rintels, portrays famous attorney Clarence Darrow, champion of underdogs, as he reminisces about his many sensational and often controversial trials. This inspiring and entertaining production starred Henry Fonda on Broadway, and was critically acclaimed as “gutsy, exciting, inspiring, funny, beautiful."

Peppered with salty humor, courtroom gusto and human relish, John Burstein’s portrayal of the colorful attorney who successfully argued such high-profile cases as the Scopes “Monkey” trial is riveting and highly entertaining.

Although Darrow’s career spanned the early decades of the 20th century, the issues he dealt with: racial prejudice, income inequality, religious intolerance and worker exploitation will resonate strongly with modern audiences. As Darrow put it, “I fight for the poor, the weak and the weary. For that long line of men, who in darkness and despair have borne the labors of the human race.”

Many will recognize Burstein from his countless appearances as Slim Goodbody on PBS, CBS’s “Captain Kangaroo” as well as from his recent original musical “The Night Kitchen, performed in Camden and on the Portland Stage last summer. According to Burstein, “As it happens, my mother was a NY State Supreme Court Judge, my father was a labor relations attorney and my son a Federal Public Defender – so the law, and its impact for good or ill has always been an important part of my social conscience. I can think of no better way to use my energy and talents than to help raise funds for the Restorative Justice Project. And, since my years of work as Slim Goodbody focused on health and nutrition, raising funds for Meals-On-Wheels is a natural.”

Meals-On-Wheels brings food to hundreds of senior Mainers every day, thus allowing them to remain in their homes.”
