Girls in Gowns” is a celebrated collaboration of the “girls” in entertainment, coming together and performing in what else but…you guessed it...“gowns”! Maria Howell, creator and producer of “GIG”, has invited some of the Queen City's most notable vocalists, to perform a variety of musical classics, that will not only warm your heart but sizzle your soul. Accompanied by the amazing NFQ Trio, led by the incomparable, Noel Freidline. We invite all the ladies in attendance to wear their favorite elegant option!
Craft cocktails and small plates begin at 6:00 pm.
Seating includes the club & patio on a first-come at door. Only Baby Grand Members qualify for preferred seating. Middle C Jazz memberships.

Maria Howell’s career began when she appeared in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film, “The Color Purple”, as the choir soloist. A song stylist in her own right, Howell has shared the musical stage with such legendary artists as Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Ray Charles, and Earl Klugh. “Girls in Gowns” was created and produced by Maria, as a brainchild event, to benefit an important charity, Students Without Mothers, where she has served on the Advisory Board for 10 years. It’s a beautiful celebration and collaboration of the “girls” in the entertainment industry, to come together and perform in what else, but “gowns”! Robyn Springer is a professional vocalist, whose richly diverse musical background includes a debut R&B solo album (Makin’ Moves, Virgin Records/Cardiac); featured vocal performances on albums by such artists as contemporary jazz saxophonist Najee to The Fugees’, John Forte; and various live tours from London to Greece, to New York, where she appeared with such legends as George Benson, Herbie Hancock, and Kirk Whalum.
Michelle Renée…with her deep love for music, has been performing on stage since the tender age of 4, is an international singer/songwriter. She has toured internationally with many bands, but most noted for her work with, The SOS Band, and Peabo Bryson. michellereneemusic.com
Toni Tupponce is Program Director for A Sign of the Times of the Carolinas, the 501 (C) 3 organization dedicated to improving our community through productions and programs that reflect the heritage of African Americans, and performs as the lead vocalist for A Sign of the Times Band. She’s opened for Grammy-winning vocalists Jane Monheit and Jennifer Holliday. The Charlotte Magazine named her “ “The Sexiest Voice in Charlotte” in 2006. asignofthetimes.org
Tyra Scott, a native of Durham, North Carolina, Tyra’s gospel music upbringing, paved the way for a totally unique approach to the idioms of jazz, samba, and pop music alike. Tyra is a 2018 Vocal Performance graduate of North Carolina Central University, having shared the stage with artists such as Branford Marsalis, Take 6, Lalah Hathaway, and Nnenna Freelon.
