ON THE BIG SCREEN:
Federal Agent Aaron Falk (Eric Bana of HULK fame) returns to his hometown of Kiewarra after an absence of more than 20 years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke, who allegedly killed his wife Karen and child Billy (sparing his baby daughter Charlotte) before taking his own life — apparently a victim of the desperation that has ravaged this community after more than a decade of drought. But the dryness in The Dry plays the same part as the heat wave in Do the Right Thing, or the constant rain in any number of noir movies. The whole town is a tinderbox, ready to catch fire at any point: literally, given Kiewarra is a danger area for bushfires, but in other ways too — viz. the emotional temperature of the locals, many of whom react in hostile ways to Falk’s presence.
His unwelcomeness is only made worse when he reluctantly agrees to stay and investigate the crime, as in doing so he opens up a different, old wound — the death of 17-year-old Ellie Deacon, a former romantic interest of his. Falk begins to suspect these two crimes, separated by decades, are connected — and the locals begin to suspect Falk is connected to Ellie's death. As he struggles to prove Luke’s innocence, Falk finds himself pitted against the prejudice towards him and pent-up rage of a terrified community.
Directed by Robert Connolly (Balibo, Paper Planes, The Bank) and based on the international bestseller of the same name by Jane Harper, The Dry is a gripping, polished double-mystery, full of surprising twists and startling character work.
