Doors Open: 10:45 AM
PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS TAKES PLACE AT WORKSHOPSF’S SECOND LOCATION IN UPPER HAIGHT AT 1310 HAIGHT STREET b/w CENTRAL AND MASONIC.
The Start Choppin’ Woodworking series is a class series designed to give beginners a place to start their exploration into the world of woodworking. In each class, we focus on using hand tools and power tools that are accessible, affordable, and can (mostly) fit in your home. Each class will complete a project that allows you to use these tools, practice and improve your new woodworking skills, and return to your hacienda with a fantastic new furniture piece!
THE PROJECT: Three Column Wooden Shelf Project
In this class, you will build your own three column wooden shelf. This medium-sized shelf is fantastic for storing and displaying books, albums, plants, photo frames... pretty much all of those home "essentials" that may still be lurking in the dark corners of your apartment closet. You can choose to stand the shelf horizontally or vertically, and will have a few options for configuring the design of the shelf columns. Once you have cut your wood and assembled your shelves, you will sand, stain, and finish them in class to complete the look that you want! You will have a few staining options (clear, gunstock, golden oak, and dark walnut). You will also have the option to add 4" hairpin legs. Each shelf is made from pine and measures approximately 39" W x 27.5" H x 11.5" D.
TOOLS & SKILLS
- general safety procedures
- understanding a "cut list"
- cutting with a compound miter saw and stop blocks
- using a nail gun and wood glue
- using a power drill, drill bits, and counter sinks
- sanding, staining, and finishing techniques
PLEASE NOTE: This class is great for total beginners with zero woodworking experience, as well as intermediates who simply like the project and/or feel a little rusty and want to get back into the craft. Our classes are more lo-fi and intended to feel accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject and desire to learn! ALSO... be aware of the size of this furniture piece and please make sure you have a way to transport it home! If you are depending on ride-sharing (Lyft, Uber, etc.), then you will need to use XL.
Supplies Needed: None. All wood, hardware, stain, and other supplies necessary to complete this furniture piece are included. You may choose to add on a set of 4" hairpin legs in satin black (see more details here: https://www.diyhairpinlegs.com/products/hairpin-legs?variant=41142539917). In addition, you will be working in an environment with sawdust and wood stain, so please dress accordingly. Do not wear open toe shoes or sandals. Boots or tennis shoes are recommended. We will supply gloves, goggles, dust masks, and aprons as necessary.
The rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy - this includes cancellation, re-books, gift certificates, moving classes, etc. For more information on canceling a class, please read our cancellation policy. All classes are 21+ unless you email for permission. If any questions, please email us at info AT workshopsf DOT org.
