Another Glory
José Medeles and Nathan Trueb’s Another Glory may be a new project, but the duo bring decades of experience to their first album as a unit. Medeles, who has played drums with The Breeders, Ben Harper, Modest Mouse, and more, handles the group’s percussion, and Trueb, who plays with Tango Alpha Tango, sings and plays guitar. The debut, Another Glory, is a stripped down affair, a conversation between two musical virtuosos with the help of guest contributors like Nels Cline, Harper, and producer Steve Berlin. It’s a nimble, efficient crew, but this description does little to animate just how dynamic, breathtaking, and original this collection of songs truly is.
Trueb and Medeles work so well together because they approach music in different ways. “Nathan doesn't really come from the improv world, but when he does, it's brilliant because he's such a prolific player,” José explains. “I'm glad that I can pull that out of him.” Nathan, for his part, functions as guardrails for Medeles, who self-admittedly can get carried away in pursuing every crevice and nuance he encounters. “Songs with verse-chorus structures are good, too,” Trueb adds with a chuckle. This blend of experimentation and traditional songwriting coalesces on the Nels Cline-assisted “Lightning Song,” which sticks to only the loosest of structures, allowing the interplay of Nels and Nathan on guitar give the song its propulsive energy. Medeles’ tom-led drum groove gallops and shuffles, shifting the ground above which Trueb sings. It’s a deeply beautiful moment, and a fine example of the two artists moving towards each other’s sound without compromising their own vision; a true snapshot of authentic collaboration. And that’s what Another Glory is: an image of two celebrated musicians uniting to make something reflective of their identities but indebted to a greater, amorphous, indescribable whole. The duo’s first album is a celebration of friendship, artistic drive, and impeccable craft. Another Glory is a tribute to music itself. “I hope people can hear the love that we have for not only our instruments, but for music in general,” Medeles concludes.
E. Ellison
E. Ellison is the solo project of Lizzy Ellison (Cardioid, Radiation City). Her recent release, Pillars, chronicles the most recent years of her life traveling back and forth from Brasil, driving across the country several times in search of ways to bring her life closer to her partners’, while simultaneously unraveling in the process. It is a dark, slow album, harmony driven with dry lead vocals, sad pianos, and acoustic guitars layered in ricocheted balance. She will be joined for this performance by longtime friend Zach Birdwell, and Decemberists fellow friends John Moen and Nate Query.
