August 14, 2019

Doors Open: 6:45 PM
Doors Open: 6:45 PM
PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS TAKES PLACE AT WORKSHOPSF’S SECOND LOCATION IN UPPER HAIGHT AT 1310 HAIGHT STREET b/w CENTRAL AND MASONIC.
In this BUILD IT YOURSELF class, professional woodworker and artist Nicole Sweeney will lead you through the process of constructing this wooden planter box and stand. Great for indoor use, these wooden planters are ideal for housing a few of your smaller 4" - 5" house plants or succulents. First, Nicole will go over the power tools and building materials necessary for the build. After a demonstration of their proper usage and safety, you’ll practice and get comfy with each tool as you cut and assemble your planter. You’ll put the finishing touches on your planter with some sanding and staining. And voila! Your planter will be complete and ready to be filled!
Each planter box measures approximately 18" width X 7" height X 5.5" depth, and stands around 10" from the ground. You can comfortably fit up to three 5" plants in each box. You will have a few color options (natural, golden oak, and dark walnut) should you choose to stain your planter. Each student will leave with one completed wooden planter box and stand, and a basic understanding of the woodworking skills and tools necessary to build additional planter boxes on your own!
TOOLS & SKILLS
- general safety procedures
- using power saws and stop blocks to cut wood
- assembling wood pieces with clamps, jigs, and wood glue
- using a brad nailer (nail gun)
- sanding, staining, and finishing the wood
PLEASE NOTE: This class is great for total beginners with zero woodworking experience, as well as intermediates who simply like the project and/or feel a little rusty and want to get back into the craft. Our classes are more lo-fi and intended to be accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject and desire to learn!
Supplies Needed: None. All wood and building materials for this project are included. Please do not wear open toe shoes or sandals (we suggest tennis shoes or boots). We will supply gloves, goggles, dust masks, and aprons as necessary. Also, plants are not included with this class, but you can pick up a few 4" - 5" plants before or after class from Robert's Hardware, located a few blocks away on Haight Street.
