Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra PRESENTS
Prague: The Golden City
Soloist: Derek Barnes, cello
Soloist: Derek Barnes, cello
Suk- Serenade for Strings
Dvořák- Waldesruhe ("Silent Woods") for solo cello
Dvořák- Rondo for solo cello
Mozart- Symphony No. 38 "Prague"
Prague, the historic capital of Bohemia, is well known for its rich history, culture and extraordinary Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It was also a center of musical activity for composers such as Antonín Dvořák, Josef Suk, and Wolfgang Mozart, who had several operas premiered in Prague at the National Theater. Our program features Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Derek Barnes, performing two contrasting works with Sinfonia by Dvořák: Andrew Mellor of the Philharmonia Orchestra described Waldesruhe (or Silent Woods) as a “dreamy romance – evocative of a forest at dusk in which the long-breathed melody sits perfectly on the cello.” Waldesruhe is followed by the playful Rondo, flavored with Czech folk characteristics.
