Week 2: July 18-20 Leslie Parker and Jonathan van Arneman

Untitled

Leslie Parker

in collaboration with dramaturg, Alexis Pauline Gumbs

Inspired by Alexis Pauline Gumbs’ book spill: scenes of black feminist fugitivity and Octavia Butler’s Wildseed, this group work incites memories of (self) love, feminist theory, and worlds derived of individual inner/outer realities. This reflection is a response to desire, mysticism, and the invisible, and cultivates a holistic approach to dance and to encourage healing from past trauma(s). Rooted in transformative energy that illuminates liberation and joy, the work experiments through conversations on rebellion, revolt and defiance in our past histories while it testifies to the range of complexities that women inhabit across various ethnicities today.

Atlantis 13

Jonathan van Arneman

in collaboration with choreographer, Peace Madimutsa

“Our mothers were pregnant African women thrown overboard while crossing the Atlantic on slave ships. We were born breathing water as we did in the womb.”—clipping., “The Deep” (2017)

Inspired by these lyrics, Atlantis 13 is a beacon of Black hope imagining Black bodies from thirteen different tribes, summoned to found an underwater utopia. It is a reimagination of a whitewashed history where Black bodies share in a common knowledge of self and use this to find and create peace even in the worst of circumstances. It is a nod to our resilience and a foreshadowing of the paradigm shift that is sure to come.
