Doors Open: 6:45 PM
Ready to take control of your wardrobe? Tackle that sewing pile? Rework all that great vintage you’ve been holding onto? In this introduction to alterations for intermediate sewists, we will cover fitting, marking, and sewing techniques for hems, tapers, darts, and more. We will also talk on denim repair and alterations. Bring along 3-4 alteration/hemming projects from home and we’ll tackle topstitch and blind hems, reshaping techniques, and conversion ideas for repurposing and upcycling (think converting pants to shorts, long sleeve to short sleeves, etc). This class welcomes, respects, and celebrates all bodies and gender identities.
Each student will be able to consult the instructor on his/her individual projects in class. Though you may not tackle every project you bring to class, you will be given the opportunity to work on atleast 1-2 projects, as well as get advice on how to approach additional projects.
Prerequisite: In order to attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.
Supplies Needed: Bring up to 4 projects that include hemming, taking things in, repair, converting pants to shorts, etc. Though you will only work on a few, we recommend bringing more than you need so you have options based on the class flow and what feels most comfortable to tackle.
Instructor Bio: Alex Lunt is the owner and head designer for her own San Francisco-based clothing brand, Nettle Studios. She holds a degree in technical fashion design from the Academy of Art, and has logged over five years of professional tailoring experience with Self Edge denim company in San Francisco. You can usually find her sitting at a sewing machine listening to true crime podcasts on full volume. Check out more of her work at https://www.nettlestudios.com/.
