In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected.

Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied piano principles to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and piano. He says that “I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range of tonal colors—that’s why I do it.”

To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents.

KENNETH WHALUM

In addition to extensive and highly regarded work as a session and touring saxophonist, Kenneth Whalum is a solo artist -- a singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer -- who specializes in atmospheric and pensive alternative soul. He established himself in the latter half of the 2000s through affiliations with Diddy, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Maxwell before he stepped forward with To Those Who Believe (2010), an independent jazz date. 

Whalum, a Memphis native, is part of a deeply musical family. He started with drums, but in middle school switched to tenor saxophone, and further honed his talent in church. After high school, Whalum relocated to New York to study at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and got a major break when Diddy enlisted him to be part of the band that toured in support of the 2006 album Press Play. Within three years, Whalum was a seasoned session musician heard on a trio of albums that topped the Billboard 200: Beyoncé's B'day, Jay-Z's American Gangster, and Maxwell's BLACKsummers'night. Whalum's work during this time was showcased most prominently on Jay-Z's "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is...)," which he also arranged, and Maxwell's Grammy-nominated "Pretty Wings."

Farber & Friends is one of the most dynamic bands in the Southeast region. From Beach and Soul to Funk, R&B and Jazz Standards, Farber & Friends covers a wide range of hit songs all night long. Their tight "in the pocket" sound is a favorite for private parties, wedding receptions and corporate events and their energy, spontaneity and interaction with the crowd keeps the party going with a continuous, contagious groove.

One of their numerous selling points is their superb lead vocals, backed by close-knit harmonies. The band features two of the most dynamic lead vocalists in the Carolinas, Robyn Springer and Brandon Stevens.

Sony recording artist, Robyn Springer, has had the pleasure of sharing the international stage with such artists as George Benson, Herbie Hancock and Kirk Whalen. Robyn is a frequent headliner at Middle C Jazz Club in Charlotte, NC. Brandon Stevens has been thrilling audiences across the Southeast and abroad with his smooth tenor voice. As a former member of legendary Detroit Soul group, Chairmen of the Board, Brandon completed two critically-acclaimed UK tours. The Chairmen’s 2017 album “Words Left Unsaid” featured songs written by Melvin and Mervin Steals, the twin songwriting brothers who penned The Spinners’ classic “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love.” Brandon shines on the lead vocals for “All I Need Is You Tonight” and “Each Morning I Wake Up”. 

In The Pocket’s core group has been together for over twenty years and includes Grammy nominated producer and songwriter, Rodney Shelton, who co-wrote and produced Robyn Springer’s current Sony hit, “Crazy Bout You”, as well as Keith Washington’s platinum record, “Kissing You”, which after 20 years is still rocking the airwaves!  Returning original members include Larry Farber on keyboards, Tim Gordon on saxophone, Joe Miers on bass, Steve Mcguirt on drums and Greg Cagle on guitar.

Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980’s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “ discovered” him and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums with Columbia records, including cache, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album, Joined at the Hip. After moving to LA, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You”.

Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on warner bro. Records, for you perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic, and much lauded, Gospel according to jazz series, (chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4). In addition to his many solo projects, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/ jazz group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).

Kirk is the recipient of numerous award and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three dove award nominations, NAACP image award nomination and has won two stellar awards- gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy award nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award for best gospel song (“it’s what I do—featuring Lalah Hathaway”) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter, Jerry Peters. Kirk has also been honored with a brass note on the Memphis walk of fame and a star on the Nashville walk of fame.

His connection with Jazz emerged during his studies at Central State University and on the up and coming jazz scene in Columbus, Ohio before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2002. Bradford has performed with artists such as Jennifer Holiday, Pharez Whitted, Slide Hampton, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Ronnie Burrage, and many others.  He is the Adjunct Jazz Piano Instructor at Davidson College and currently serves on the faculty of Jazz Arts CHARLOTTE (JAC) Youth Ensembles & Workshops.
