    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

    2h 10m / R / Adventure, Crime

Set against a gritty backdrop of the American Southwest, Thelma and Louise starts as a girls-weekend road trip between two best friends, but soon takes a dark turn.

Timid housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) and footloose Louise’s (Susan Sarandon) first stop is a few beers at a run-down roadhouse. Filled with liquid courage and flexing her brief freedom, Thelma flirts with a local barfly, only to find out he won’t take “no” for an answer. Thank goodness Louise is there to do what any best friend would do, given both the opportunity and the ammunition. Now the ladies are on the lam, making a series of questionable decisions (one of which involves a young, shirtless Brad Pitt) as they contemplate their next move, but also strengthening their bond of friendship and solidarity.

Starring two women known for their advocacy (both of whom were nominated for Best Actress Oscars that year), it’s no surprise that the film resonated deeply with audiences upon its release, sparking discussions about feminism, female empowerment, and the limitations imposed by gender roles. The portrayal of two strong-willed women breaking free from oppression struck a chord in the early 1990s, a time marked by increasing awareness of gender discrimination and calls for women's rights. It won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is still celebrated for its powerful performances, thought-provoking narrative, and enduring cultural impact.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Hector Sotomayor, professor of Film, Art, & Media at the Ringling College of Art & Design.

    1h 20m / Not Rated / Sci-Fi, Horror

Small-town California doctor Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy… not that one) has discovered that extraterrestrial seed pods are replacing the townspeople with emotionless clones while they sleep. As the invasion spreads, Dr. Bennell and his friends must fight to survive and warn others before they too are replaced.

The film's eerie atmosphere, suspenseful pacing, and underlying themes of paranoia and conformity struck a chord with audiences during the Cold War era. Against the backdrop of McCarthyism and the Red Scare, Body Snatchers provided a chilling allegory for the fear of communist infiltration and loss of individuality.

Now, revered as a quintessential example of 1950s horror cinema, the film's innovative premise and psychological tension have cemented its status as a cult classic. It has spawned (pun intended) several remakes, and its influence can be seen in countless subsequent works of horror and science fiction as the themes of infiltration and societal distrust have remained unfortunately relevant across the generations.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Ryan Terry, a Film Studies & Screenwriting lecturer at the University of Tampa and horror/suspense cinema scholar.

Set in the aftermath of World War II, Notorious follows Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman), the daughter of a convicted German spy, as she is recruited by American intelligence agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to infiltrate a group of Nazis in Brazil. As Alicia becomes entangled in a dangerous game of espionage, she finds herself torn between loyalty to her country and her growing feelings for Devlin.

Falling midway through Alfred Hitchcock's storied career – but about a decade before many of his well-known thrillers – Notorious stands out for its intricate plot, sophisticated suspense, and complex characters. It showcases Hitchcock's mastery of suspenseful storytelling and his ability to create tension through both psychological drama and cinematic technique. Its exploration of themes such as love, betrayal, and sacrifice, all set against the backdrop of post-war intrigue and political espionage, drew standout performances from Bergman and Grant and earned Notorious an Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Ryan Terry, a Film Studies & Screenwriting lecturer at the University of Tampa and horror/suspense cinema scholar.

    1h 50m / Not Rated / Drama

In the glamorous, decaying world of Hollywood, Sunset Blvd. tells the story struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden), who finds himself tangled in the web of faded silent film star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). As Gillis becomes involved in Norma's delusions of a comeback, he finds himself trapped in a toxic relationship that ultimately leads to tragedy.

At its core, Sunset Blvd. is a scathing critique of Hollywood’s ruthlessness, particularly its treatment of aging stars and the relentless pursuit of fame and fortune. Billy Wilder's direction and sharp, Oscar-winning screenplay (co-written with Charles Brackett and D.M. Marshman Jr.) offer a darkly satirical portrayal of the film industry, exposing the harsh realities lurking beneath its glittering facade. Norma stands proudly as a symbol of the bygone silent film era, clinging to her former glory, and through her, we have a front-row seat to the sad show of obsession, delusion, and the price of success.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Foster Hirsch, film historian and author of the new book, Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties.

    3h 22m / R / Crime Drama

Francis Ford Coppola won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for his cinematic masterpiece The Godfather Part II in 1974. Part sequel, part origin story, it explores the intricate world of the Corleone crime family, juxtaposing the rise of young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) in early 20th-century New York with the reign of his son Michael (Al Pacino) in the 1950s. As Michael struggles to expand the family's empire in the face of betrayal and internal strife, parallels are drawn to Vito's own journey to power.

The film features truly outstanding performances from De Niro, who brings depth and nuance to the role of young Vito, and Pacino, whose portrayal of Michael Corleone is both chilling and compelling. But what sets The Godfather Part II apart (and, arguably, makes it even better than its predecessor) is its ambitious narrative structure and the deeper exploration of themes such as power, family, and the corrupting influence of ambition in Coppola's riveting screenplay, co-written with original Godfather author Mario Puzo. The film skillfully weaves together past and present, offering a richly layered portrayal of the Corleone dynasty and the evolution of its characters that has solidified its place as one of the greatest films ever made.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Hector Sotomayor, professor of Film, Art, & Media at the Ringling College of Art & Design.

    2h 20m / PG / Historical Drama

Based on the true story of the ill-fated 1970 space mission, Ron Howard’s gripping historical drama Apollo 13 follows astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) as they struggle to survive after an oxygen tank explosion cripples their spacecraft en route to the moon. Facing dwindling resources and daunting technical challenges, NASA engineers and the crew work tirelessly to bring the astronauts safely back to Earth.

The film has been widely praised for its meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in portraying the events of the real Apollo 13 mission. Ron Howard and his team went to great lengths to recreate the spacecraft and mission control settings with authenticity, consulting with NASA personnel and utilizing actual footage from the mission. The cast have been praised for their emotional depth and realism, capturing the true tension and camaraderie among the astronauts and ground crew.

While Apollo 13 does take some creative liberties for dramatic effect, the overall portrayal of the mission and its challenges remains faithful to the historical record. Its portrayal of the courage, ingenuity, and teamwork displayed by the astronauts and NASA personnel during the crisis has earned it widespread acclaim, cementing its status as a classic in both the space exploration genre and in cinematic history.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

    1h 50m / PG / Western, Drama

Starring Paul Newman as the titular Butch Cassidy and Robert Redford as his sidekick, the Sundance Kid, this nominee for the Best Picture Oscar dramatizes the exploits of an infamous band of real-life outlaws in 1890s Wyoming. When a train robbery goes wrong, Cassidy and Kid find themselves on the run with a posse hard on their heels and little choice but to flee to South America.

Set against the backdrop of the closing frontier and the end of the “Wild West” era, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid captures the essence of a changing society marked by technological advancements and the encroachment of civilization. Blending elements of action, comedy, and romance, the film’s themes of friendship, loyalty, and the struggle to adapt to a rapidly evolving world resonate with audiences even today. Iconic performances, witty dialogue, and Burt Bacharach’s unforgettable soundtrack (including the Oscar-winning “Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head") have cemented its status as one of the greatest Westerns ever made.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with retired Tampa Bay Times film critic Steve Persall.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

    1h 42m / Not Rated / Musical, Fantasy

The Wizard of Oz has permeated popular culture to such an extent that, even if they haven’t seen it themselves, most people know it almost by heart. It’s certainly true that they don’t make them like this anymore. It’s a musical, and it’s a fantasy story, and it’s a kids’ movie, and it’s a morality play about having inside yourself the things you want from the outside world. But it’s also kind of a road-trip movie — Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion make friends and get up to some crazy antics on the Yellow Brick Road. And it’s also kind of a disaster picture — the tornado scene thrilled and terrified audiences. And the moment of transition between black & white and color is maybe the most iconic single instant of film since directors started adding sound. We encourage you to bring somebody who’s never seen The Wizard of Oz to the Theatre. You might find something new in it yourself.

Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Paul Wilborn, an award-winning journalist, author, bandleader, and Great American Songbook historian.
