THIS IS AN ARCHIVED SHOW FROM THE PORTLAND MUSIC STREAM.

With what PopMatters describes as "tenacious swagger," critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the "Rosie the Riveter" archetype from WWII.

Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 - a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.

Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters' inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, '70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session. Produced by her longtime musical collaborator, Chris Funk of the Decemberists, the 10 original tracks feature Flynn's soulful vocals and compelling brand of songwriting, amped-up and virtuously enveloped by the electric guitar work of Nancy Luca and Jenny Conlee on all manner of keys. Luca honed her style and skill playing with Tom Petty and Bo Diddley. Conlee hails from the Decemberists as well. The rhythm section boasts two additional highly-regarded Portland musicians: Jolie Clausen on drums and Carmen Paradise on bass.

Tickets are $15 to view the Live Stream of this performance.

Music and the Aging Brain: A Discussion and Concert

Our brains undergo numerous changes that affect memory, motor, and sensory functions as we age. Many of these changes are amplified in diseases like Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Could music limit the effects of aging and neurodegenerative diseases?

At this event, learn from Dr. Larry Sherman, a musician and Professor of Neuroscience at the Oregon Health & Science University, and singer/songwriter Naomi LaViolette as they explore how listening, practicing, and performing music influence the brain, and how these activities could impact brain aging and disease. They will also discuss Naomi’s work as a pianist, vocalist, arranger, and composer with Steven Goodwin, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, and the Saving His Music project, which has received prominent coverage in national and local news.

Join us and enjoy a multi-media presentation that combines live music and visuals with discussions about cutting edge science. The presenters will be performing live music ranging from well-known composers and original pieces by Ms. LaViolette and Steven Goodwin.

You can buy a single-event ticket for $15 to view the Live Stream of this performance on Wednesday, October 14.

You may also purchase a full season subscription for Season 5 of the Portland Music Stream HERE for $100 and get access to all 20 music shows of this season!

Whether you buy a single ticket or the full subscription you will have access to the live event and the recorded event on-demand. Your ticket or subscription will help keep a vital venue alive, musicians able to perform, and foster community in this time of social distancing.

 A captivating song-crafter, a true storyteller." - NPR.

Award winning singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Robin Jackson, known for his wild, theatrical contributions to bands like Vagabond Opera and the March Fourth Marching Band, has brought a strong presence to the world of indie folk.  Mr Jackson, often joined by his all-star six piece ensemble of NW musicians The Caravan, draws upon the moody spirit of his rain-soaked, Portland, Oregon home to create an eclectic brew of dreamy folk-pop, cinematic indie rock and above all, enigmatic storytelling.   He has played with everyone from Gogol Bordello to Amanda Palmer to The Decemberists and currently also tours with the Polish Ambassador.  He lives in Portland on an urban farm with his cat and a circus. He has two albums out including 'Dust Diaries' (2010) and Dark Stars (2017).

THIS IS AN ARCHIVED SHOW FROM THE PORTLAND MUSIC STREAM

The Cabin Project, made up of four Portland-based women, is an indie rock band whose sound stems from haunting choruses, two-part harmonies, pedals, synths and string sections. The Cabin Project's newest album, "Decenter", emerged out of shifting political times and an urgency to call upon the complicated stories weave our lives together.

Born in an attic "cabin" studio lined with Douglas Fir, the band started as a project of Katie Sawicki, a former-folksinger from Brooklyn. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2008, Sawicki sought out musicians to collaborate with, leading her to musical partner Zanny Geffel, an orchestral drummer, rooted in jazz and percussion. Jean Mastaler and Kelly Clifton create the band’s strings and bass section.
