The Night Travelers

The Night Travelers are a virtuosic, artistic and charismatic musical duo with the acoustic impact and harmonic depth to please any audience.

Drawing on multiple genres (World, Bluegrass, Folk, Country, Americana, Blues, Jazz, Dawg, Celtic, Classical, and Pop/Rock) and focusing on tone and presence by creating incredible virtuoso arrangements for each instrument, The Night Travelers create a sound which presents as if way more than two people were playing. As detailed melodic lines on both instruments weave and dance around each other, audiences often comment that they could swear they hear at least 4 instruments playing and are mesmerized by the sound and carried away.

Combining these special techniques and philosophies with Master level musicianship allows The Night Travelers to lift the simple combination of a banjo, bass, and fiddle above average expectations, radiating an orchestral quality which transcends genres in a distinctive voice all their own.

“Her extraordinary voice truly sets the music apart...nothing short of stunning.” (No Depression)

Atlanta’s own Shawn Mullins describes Callaghan as “a voice the whole world needs to hear.”

Her Birthday Show each January has become a highlight of the Red Clay Music Foundry calendar!

Originally from the UK, Callaghan moved to the USA in 2010 to tour and record with Mullins.

Since then she’s become a headliner in multiple US cities and an Atlanta favourite!

At this show you’ll enjoy Callaghan’s gorgeous voice, thoughtful lyrics and the stories behind her songs.

As well as her birthday, Callaghan is celebrating the release of her new album, simply called Callaghan, described by Maverick Magazine as “a euphoric collection of piano led songs, from a singer-songwriter of a seriously high standard.”

The last 5 Callaghan Birthday Shows have sold out so please get your tickets early!

Headlining is guitarist and singer/songwriter Daniel Hardin from Athens, Georgia, playing electrifying rock and blues reminiscent of John Mayer or Joe Bonamassa, with a touch of alt-rock influenced playing. He is back from his first visit to Red Clay Theatre in July of 2018. Opening for him is local Athens alternative-rock band, Jester, who has taken the local Athens scene by storm with their diverse songwriting ability that is faithful to Athens’ alternative roots. With something for all different types of music lovers, you will not want to miss this show.

"This makes me want to pick up a guitar again". - Random Instagram comment

Daniel Hardin is a singer/songwriter and guitarist out of Athens, Ga that tends to prefer a DIY approach. In between practicing guitar and singing, he spent most of his high school years in Alpharetta, Georgia learning the craft of building guitars from scratch, recording and mixing music, and songwriting. By his senior year, this allowed him to take a few handmade instruments and record his first self-produced, self-titled, full-length original album. Then, recruiting local players to help him form a band, it wasn't long before he began to play out in local venues, most notably selling out The Velvet Note in Milton, Ga four times before leaving for college in Athens, Ga.

Influenced by such artists as John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark Jr. and Collective soul, his songwriting fuses tasteful melodies to irresistible grooves to form his unique spin on the rock genre. All of this can be heard on his first album, with highlights including the hook-driven acoustic tune, “Old Day”, the driving rock opener, “Take Me Home”, and the soulful B.B. King tribute, “3 O’clock blues”. In addition, his 2017 single, “I’ll Be There”, shows a wildly different side of his musicality, combining groovy pop rhythms and catchy vocal harmonies to create a funky, reggae-influenced alt-rock track that stands out from the rest. Most recently, he released a six-song EP, titled “The Road Less Traveled”, that showcases six completely different sides of his songwriting ability. The first track, "Miles Around" is filled with slap guitar, slap bass, and a punchy rhythm section that drives the emotive vocals and lead guitar, while the fourth track, "So Easily" is a slower, fan favorite that explodes into incredibly dynamic choruses and melodic guitar solos. Overall, this EP represents only the beginning of what is to come.

Jester:

Hailing from Athens, Georgia, Jester is a fresh, new wave of alternative rock. They joined together in early 2017 and came out with well received singles “Cool Off” and “Slip Back”. The band has been playing locally in the Athens and Atlanta area for the past year and a half.

Jester’s latest EP, Not Coming Home, is out on all streaming services now. The four song compilation portrays the various colors and influences of the members of Jester. The songs range from fun, high energy to emotionally driven rock. Although the songs show diversity the band still stays true to its alternative roots. Jester has songs that any music lover can enjoy, so throw on some Jester and see for yourself why people can’t get enough of this band.

“Beth Wood is a musical triple-threat — a thoughtful songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist with a supple, soulful voice.” — Washington Post

Beth’s skills in the craft of songwriting have been recognized by the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award, The Sisters Folk Festival Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Award, the Billboard World Song Contest, and many more.

There have been incredible and surreal moments in the spotlight: opening for Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald, Shawn Colvin, Chris Whitley; being a four-time featured artist on Cayamo, a week-long Caribbean songwriters’ cruise along with most of her living musical heroes; singing the national anthem for 42,000 people at a major league baseball game; discussing guitar tunings with David Crosby backstage at a festival; being featured on “Troubadour, TX”, a nationally syndicated documentary-style singer-songwriter reality television series airing in almost 40 million households and 140 U.S. markets.

Sarah Siskind

Sarah Siskind continues to be one of today’s most respected and covered songwriters as well as a stand-out independent artist, who Spin Magazine calls “an artist you must hear now”.

Armed with a striking vocal style and solid guitar and piano work, Sarah is a regular NPR performer with features on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, World Cafe with David Dye, All Songs Considered, Song Of The Day and most recently NPR’s Mountain Stage.

She has toured with Bonnie Raitt, Paul Brady, Grammy winner Bon Iver (who also famously covered her “Lovin’s For Fools”) and The Swell Season and had songs recorded by Alison Krauss (the GRAMMY nominated “Simple Love”), Randy Travis, Madi Diaz and many more.

Hailed by The Washington Post as “one of Nashville's finest song interpreters,”

Kathy Mattea has enjoyed the kind of success many artists only dream of: two GRAMMY wins, four CMA Awards, four #1 country singles, and five gold albums (plus a platinum collection of her greatest hits). The dream almost ended, though, when Mattea entered her 50s and began to find her voice changing.

What followed was a three year journey through life challenges and vocal glitches that she describes as her “dark night of the soul,” a trying time of personal anguish and professional uncertainty that threatened to silence her permanently.

“The hardest thing was facing the question of whether I would still be able to sing well enough to enjoy it. That was the acid test for me, and I had to be willing to walk through a process that bumped me up against the very real possibility that, in the end, the answer might be “No.”

Instead, Mattea dug in with a vocal coach, re-committed to her music, and emerged with the most poignant album of her career, “Pretty Bird.”

Working with her old friend, music roots wizard Tim O’Brien, producing, “Pretty Bird” is a chronicle of her journey, song by song, back to singing for the sheer joy of it.

It’s an emotional, moving collection, one that draws its strength not only from Mattea’s touching performances, but also from her uncanny ability to weave seemingly disparate material into a cohesive whole.

From a playful take on Oliver Wood’s “Chocolate On My Tongue” to a tender rendition of Mary Gauthier’s “Mercy Now,” from a British traditional to a Bobbie Gentry classic, these are the songs that helped Mattea reclaim her voice, and she inhabits
each as fully as if it were her own.

Exquisitely arranged and delivered with the kind of subtlety and nuance that can only come from a lifetime of heartbreak and triumph, ‘Pretty Bird’ is a title Kathy Mattea inhabits quite literally, and it’s a welcome reintroduction to one of country and Americana music’s most enduring and beloved figures.
