International Folk Music Awards 2017 Artist of the Year Ordinary Elephant captivates listeners with their well-honed combination of insightful writing, effortless harmonies and intertwined clawhammer banjo and guitar. The collaboration of husband and wife, their connection, and their influences (such as Gillian Welch, Guy Clark, Anais Mitchell) all meet on stage. You see it, hear it, and then you find yourself truly feeling it. “As genuine as it gets” says legendary Texas producer Lloyd Maines.

Crystal and Pete Damore have been performing together since 2011, when they called Texas home. The two took to full-time nomadic life with their dogs in 2014, and are still finding home and music wherever they go. The duo was both a Kerrville New Folk Finalist and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist in 2017, and their release ‘Before I Go’ was No. 7 on the Folk DJ Chart for that year.

Clay Parker and Jodi James

Clay Parker and Jodi James are an acoustic duo from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The pair's use of dense harmony-singing and subtle musical arrangements indelibly binds them to the tradition of singer-songwriters and positions them well in the folk roots and americana strains of country music.

Seth Glier’s new album "Birds" is steeped in conflict and contradictions. There’s grief and loss, but also strength and resilience; doubt and dismay, but also a sense of optimism as Glier confronts heavy topics and wrestles them into the daylight.

Glier (pronounced “Gleer”) recorded Birds in an airy loft in western Massachusetts outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows. Birds roost just outside those windows, on the roof of the converted mill building where he lives, and they became his sympathetic audience while Glier made the album. “I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the birds,” he says “I’d check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.”

Birds is Glier’s fifth album, and the latest entry in a burgeoning career that has included a Grammy nomination and a pair of Independent Music Awards while touring with artists including Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams.

The songs on Birds range from personal to political, and are bound together by the awareness that our world is a fragile place that is all the more magical for it. Glier makes that point on a large scale with “Water on Fire,” a terse, grinding tune that opens with a cynical reworking of a Ray Charles lyric as Glier uses fracking to dig into the false equivalence between freedom and capitalism. “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet” has a more visceral, intimate approach: the soulful slow jam, full of warm guitars and multi-tracked vocals, is about the death of Glier’s autistic brother.

Together, those songs represent the opposite poles of Birds. “I was really trying to explore connections on this record,” Glier says. Among those connections is the one between race and the criminal justice system on “Justice for All,” a raw chain-gang stomp that sounds almost like an old field recording. “Like I Do” takes a more oblique tack, drawing out feelings of anger through the use of noisy synthesizers and fuzzed-out bass pads.

The songs on Birds reflect a scope of sound and style: the title track is lush and & orchestral, for example, while “Too Much Water” pairs Glier’s voice and piano with subtle accompaniment from horns, for a classic, elegant feel that calls to mind Harry Nilsson in the early ’70s. “People Like Us” is jaunty and up-tempo, while the trebly guitar arpeggios and moaning saxophone on “Just Because I Can” sound like a sock-hop slow dance, until you zero in on lyrics delivered by a narrator who dynamites his domestic bliss simply for the power trip. Conflict. Contradiction.

Chuck Mcdowell from ESOEBO hosts the EOP Writer Series. Joining Chuck for the january 16, 2019 show is Dan Navarro, David Olney, and Korby Lenker.

Korby Lenker

Idaho-born, longtime East Nashville resident Korby Lenker takes a lot of chances. He’s long been a heavy-touring, award-winning singer-songwriter; two years ago he added ‘published author’ to his resume, and now, as creator and star of a new scripted web series called MORSE CODE, Korby continues to take the definition of ‘independent creative’ and push it forward.

Dan Navarro

“...extraordinary artist” – J.Roser, That Mag

“Dan Navarro is an enthusiastic and captivating performer” BLDicks, NWTimes

For over thirty years, Dan Navarro has written, sung, played and acted his way through a rich and varied career.

Dan’s started as a songwriter, most often with Eric Lowen, for artists as diverse as Pat Benatar (the Grammy-nominated “We Belong”) , The Bangles, Jackson Browne, Dave Edmunds, The Temptations, Dionne Warwick, The Triplets, Dutch star Marco Borsato, and Austin outlaw legend Rusty Weir.

David Olney

“Americana Pioneer” singer-songwriter/poet, stream-caster and actor DAVID OLNEY has released more than 20 albums over four decades. His new “This Side Or The Other” recording on Black Hen Music was co-produced by Juno award-winning producer Steve Dawson. Mr. Olney’s music has been prominently featured in ABC-TV’s “Nashville” and his intelligent songs have been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury, The Wailin’ Jennys, Tim O’Brien, Front Country, Slaid Cleaves and Steve Young, among many others. Well-known for his energetic live performances packed with such an intensity, they leave audiences with a truly memorable experience.

“Olney’s POETIC WORDPLAY, INTRIGUING STORY-SONGS, and WORLD-WEARY VOCALS put him in a class by himself … RIYL Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, or James McMurtry.” ( That Devil Music )

Chuck McDowell

Chuck is a Georgia-based singer-songwriter and frontman for the band ESOEBO. He is a former winner of Eddie Owen Presents: Songwriters Open Mic Shootout.

Headlining is guitarist and singer/songwriter Daniel Hardin from Athens, Georgia, playing electrifying rock and blues reminiscent of John Mayer or Joe Bonamassa, with a touch of alt-rock influenced playing. He is back from his first visit to Red Clay Theatre in July of 2018.

"This makes me want to pick up a guitar again". - Random Instagram comment

Daniel Hardin is a singer/songwriter and guitarist out of Athens, Ga that tends to prefer a DIY approach. In between practicing guitar and singing, he spent most of his high school years in Alpharetta, Georgia learning the craft of building guitars from scratch, recording and mixing music, and songwriting. By his senior year, this allowed him to take a few handmade instruments and record his first self-produced, self-titled, full-length original album. Then, recruiting local players to help him form a band, it wasn't long before he began to play out in local venues, most notably selling out The Velvet Note in Milton, Ga four times before leaving for college in Athens, Ga.

Influenced by such artists as John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark Jr. and Collective soul, his songwriting fuses tasteful melodies to irresistible grooves to form his unique spin on the rock genre. All of this can be heard on his first album, with highlights including the hook-driven acoustic tune, “Old Day”, the driving rock opener, “Take Me Home”, and the soulful B.B. King tribute, “3 O’clock blues”. In addition, his 2017 single, “I’ll Be There”, shows a wildly different side of his musicality, combining groovy pop rhythms and catchy vocal harmonies to create a funky, reggae-influenced alt-rock track that stands out from the rest. Most recently, he released a six-song EP, titled “The Road Less Traveled”, that showcases six completely different sides of his songwriting ability. The first track, "Miles Around" is filled with slap guitar, slap bass, and a punchy rhythm section that drives the emotive vocals and lead guitar, while the fourth track, "So Easily" is a slower, fan favorite that explodes into incredibly dynamic choruses and melodic guitar solos. Overall, this EP represents only the beginning of what is to come.

Purists Beware! Tray Dahl & The Jugtime Ragband is not jug band, ragtime, or dixieland. It is an energetic amalgamation of all the popular styles of the 1920's/30's – jazz, a little blues, a bit of swing, a pinch old time gospel, and even classic showtunes – all immersed in an early 20th century New Orleans sound.

“Beth Wood is a musical triple-threat — a thoughtful songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist with a supple, soulful voice.” — Washington Post

Beth’s skills in the craft of songwriting have been recognized by the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award, The Sisters Folk Festival Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Award, the Billboard World Song Contest, and many more.

There have been incredible and surreal moments in the spotlight: opening for Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald, Shawn Colvin, Chris Whitley; being a four-time featured artist on Cayamo, a week-long Caribbean songwriters’ cruise along with most of her living musical heroes; singing the national anthem for 42,000 people at a major league baseball game; discussing guitar tunings with David Crosby backstage at a festival; being featured on “Troubadour, TX”, a nationally syndicated documentary-style singer-songwriter reality television series airing in almost 40 million households and 140 U.S. markets.

Sarah Siskind

Sarah Siskind continues to be one of today’s most respected and covered songwriters as well as a stand-out independent artist, who Spin Magazine calls “an artist you must hear now”.

Armed with a striking vocal style and solid guitar and piano work, Sarah is a regular NPR performer with features on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, World Cafe with David Dye, All Songs Considered, Song Of The Day and most recently NPR’s Mountain Stage.

She has toured with Bonnie Raitt, Paul Brady, Grammy winner Bon Iver (who also famously covered her “Lovin’s For Fools”) and The Swell Season and had songs recorded by Alison Krauss (the GRAMMY nominated “Simple Love”), Randy Travis, Madi Diaz and many more.
