    WXPN Welcomes John Hiatt

    Sellersville, PA
    United States
Doors at 7:30 PM, Show at 8:00 PM

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
A master lyricist and satirical storyteller, John Hiatt delivers songs filled with tales of redemption, relationships and surrendering on his own terms. Hiatt's finest album is 1987's Bring the Family; other catalog highlights include the pop and rock of 1983's "Riding with the King," the rough-hewn blues-rock of 2008's "Same Old Man," and 2021's "Leftover Feelings." His lyrics and melodies have graced more than 20 studio albums, have been recorded by Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt and scores of others, and have earned him a place in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, a BMI Troubadour award, and a lifetime achievement in songwriting designation from the Americana Music Association.

A passionate and thoughtful singer-songwriter, Matt Koelsch has built his music career around stirring lyrics, percolating rhythms, and soaring vocals. His songs strike a chord with listeners as he draws on the pains, gains, and adventures of his life growing up in New England. Koelsch’s thrilling and soulful performances deliver falsetto, guitar, and whistle solos in a bold, original take on the alternative-pop genre. Catchy vocals and upbeat, dance-worthy melodies set the hook, while other tracks capture the heartache of romantic ballads in yearning lyrics, simple guitar melodies, and soothing rhythms.

Howie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering, high registers, but also grates with real, pleading grit,” as one critic put it.

Shortly after graduating high school, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote, financed and released his first effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. During his relentless touring schedule, Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loopsampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band.

After signing with Epic Records, Day released his major-label debut, Stop All The World Now, and hit the road to support it. The constant promotion paid off: it was certified gold in the U.S. and spawned two Top 10 radio hits: “She Says” and the platinum single “Collide.” Welcome Howie when he returns to Sellersville to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of that album.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

With countless tunes you know from the first note, rip-roaring gigs you can count on, and a whole lot of energy you’ll take home with you, BoDeans continue to contribute to the American songbook as a tried-and-true institution. Founded and led by original frontman, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Kurt Neumann, the band’s catalog consists of generational anthems such as “Good Things,” You Don’t Get Much,” “Idaho,” and “Closer To Free,” just to name a few. However, they still reflect the soul and spirit of the modern American experience on their fourteenth full-length offering, 4 The Last Time, due to be released this June.

BoDeans songs have been used in various television shows including “Party of Five,” ABC News, NBC Monday Night Football, “The Simpsons,” “Northern Exposure,” Dawson’s Creek” and many others. FOX used the song “Closer To Free” as the opening theme of their hit TV show, “Party of Five,” which became the band’s biggest hit, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Their songs have been in movies such as The Color of Money, The PlayerOpportunity Knocks, Heavyweights and many others.

Long known as one of the best live acts in the business, BoDeans continue to tour year round and continue to deliver amazing, high energy, performances. "I realized some time ago that the key to the BoDeans identity is the fans' connection to our music - nowhere is that more evident or rewarding as when we come together - live. We love to connect with the fans who have supported us for so long and who have brought us so much inspiration." said Kurt Neumann, the band's founder and frontman, "We will continue to play as long as they continue to come out and sing along."

The Lovin’ Spoonful were often referred to as the American Beatles. Formed in the Greenwich Village, New York City in the mid 60s, the band challenged the British Invasion with an astonishing an unrivaled string of hits. Their first 7 singles landed on Billboard’s Top 10 chart within 18 months! Led by John Sebastian, the band helped pioneer the musical genre of folk rock. By 1966, they were the third best selling act in the US, behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The original lineup last performed in 1968, after which John Sebastian departed to pursue a solo career. In 2000, the original band members reunited and performed at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Original member, bassist Steve Boone, is still touring and keeping the group’s hits alive.

Revisit the good time spirit of the 60s with the era’s premier hitmakers. Reminisce while listening to the hits: “Do You Believe In Magic?,” “Summer In The City,” “Daydream” and more.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Chris Beard is a modern blues guitarist and singer like no other. His personal connections to the blues were forged with the living blues men he sat with since childhood. Born in 1957, Beard is the son of blues guitarist, Joe Beard, who grew up on Beale Street in the 1950s. When family friends like Matt “Guitar” Murphy and Buddy Guy stopped by to visit, young Beard became their willing pupil. Chris says, “when your father grew up on Beale Street and music was in your DNA, then blues is who you are and what you do.”

While Greg Sover’s friends, in his Philadelphia neighborhood where he grew up, were listening to local rappers, he was immersed in classic rock, country and the blues, ever since he first picked up a guitar at the age of five. Sover names Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Dwight Yoakam guitarist Pete Anderson and, of course, all three Kings - B.B., Freddie and Albert - as early influences. His fourth and latest album, His-Story, features eight blues, roots and rock-tinged originals.

Eliza Neals, a Detroit blues-rock star on the rise, honors the gut wrenching, soul splitting intent the American roots of contemporary blues represents with inspired songwriting, live performances and magic not seen in years. Eliza Neals sings with unearthly passion and velvety grit, effortlessly pushing air to new heights. Her operatically trained voice has been called both sexy and menacing. None of this is surprising of course, since Eliza studied with Motown Legend Barrett Strong and could rightfully be called the last of the truly trained Motown singers.

Mark and Maggie O’Connor are releasing their first album together in 8 years, Life After Life, and touring it beginning spring of 2024. Recently Mark penned his memoir, Crossing Bridges (featured on NPR’s Morning Edition), and now the 7-time CMA Musician of the Year and 3-time Grammy Winner is touring behind their recording out March 2024 on ONErpm Records. Their album features the exquisite violin and vocal stylings of the beautiful Maggie O’Connor - a star on the rise - and it showcases Mark's new original songs, several co-written with fellow Grammy-winner, Joe Henry.

The Life After Life tour will see the duo performing Americana vocal songs and classics, Mark’s newly minted guitar and mandolin, as well as the couple’s virtuoso violin-work anchored by Mark’s million-seller “Appalachia Waltz” - all of it never failing to bring the audience to its feet.

Loaded .38s, space heaters, and big skies. Welcome to the lethal, littered landscape of Jim Heath’s imagination. True to his high evangelical calling, Jim is a Revelator, both revealing and reinterpreting the country-blues-rock roots of American music. He’s a time-travelling space-cowboy on an endless interstellar musical tour, and we are all the richer and “psychobillier” for getting to tag along.

Reverend Horton Heat have been the outlet of this creative mind for 29 years, leading to 10 full-length albums, 3 “best-of” collections, 2 DVD releases and thousands of memorable live performances. The band has continually been a mainstay of late night TV and has an incredible tour history. Jim Heath and Jimbo Wallace have chewed up more road than the Google Maps drivers. For 25 psycho(billy) years, they have blazed an indelible, unforgettable, and meteoric trail across the globe with their unique blend of musical virtuosity, legendary showmanship, and mythic imagery.

The Surfrajettes are a four-piece instrumental combo from Toronto formed in late 2015. They have charmed audiences with their clever mix of psychedelic rock and reverb-drenched surf music, sky-high beehives, go-go boots, and eyeliner as thick as their guitar strings.

The band achieved viral online notoriety from their home-made performance videos and their feature by Norman’s Rare Guitars in LA. “Party Line/Toxic,” their debut single, was released late in 2018 and they toured extensively in its support. The band released the follow up single “Hale’iwa Hustle / Banzai Pipeline” in 2020 and spent the rest of 2020 and most of 2021 writing and recording their debut LP Roller Fink.

The Surfrajettes are guitarists Shermy Freeman and Nicole Damoff, bassist Sarah Butler, and drummer Annie Lillis. When not on tour, the group is busy woodshedding in their secret beach hut, sewing new miniskirts, debating vintage gear, and daydreaming about performing in a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Billy Prine is a natural-born storyteller just like his late, great brother John Prine was a natural-born songwriter. John was a great communicator of the human experience whittled down to the best words. His big, little brother, owner of a rich, booming voice yet full of subtleness, is one of the finest orators you’ll ever hear – also choosing just the right turn of phrase.

During these concerts celebrating John’s life in song, Billy will tell stories about or surrounding some of John’s most beloved songs before leading his band through his version of John’s timeless masterpieces. As an example, fans will get to hear the first time John played his classic song “Paradise” for their father as the family sat around the kitchen table.

Songs are stories, novellas, if you will, and stories often become songs. It is only fitting that in the course of each show during this tour, that Billy relates – as only he can – the stories that surround the songs of his dear brother John.

Moving to Nashville one day is a big dream for musicians from all over the world, including Scarlett Egan from Heidelberg, Germany. From an early age, she was exposed to American Country and Folk music as her parents had their own touring Country band, which she joined as a teenager. She built Nashville connections backing up artists such as Paul Overstreet, Billy Yates, Daryl Singletary, Deborah Allen and Brent Mason as a singer, guitar, and bass player. At 19, with money saved from her shows, she flew to Nashville to record her first original Country album with some of Nashville’s top studio musicians.

After touring heavily opening for acts like Toby Keith, Albert Lee, Chely Wright and Asleep At The Wheel, she decided to get a music degree and began studying Jazz back in Germany. After finishing her studies, she packed her bags and bought another ticket to Nashville for three months. Seven years later, she is still in Nashville honing her songwriting craft.

Scarlett’s songs are refreshingly genuine, clever and beautifully heartfelt. Her new EP The Next Man Who Loves Me is a collection of songs she wrote about the path of coming out of old unhealthy relationship patterns. She is a natural entertainer who catches every audience's attention with her humor, ease and grace.

The 5-piece All-Star ensemble quickly gained a reputation for flipping the "Tribute Band" script on its head, with exploratory performances of iconic and deep cut Pink Floyd classics, David Gilmour-centric and solo compositions, and pulling other surprise classic rock masterpieces out of their hats. Their version of Kate Bush’s "Running Up That Hill" appeared in their sets weeks ahead of its Stranger Things-buoyed resurgence to the top of the charts...making the band appear spookily prescient.

Starting from the heart of Pink Floyd’s musical structure, these superstars allow each other to soar in collaborative improvisation to deeply express the soul of this profound music. These lifelong, stadium musicians add a new, authentic edge to the virtuosic impact of the compositions, better than a mere tribute band. Floyd fanatics throughout North America have been amazed at the agility of these sincerely dedicated and venerable artists as they dove deeply into a catalogue of hits, deep tracks and astonishing covers.

Their original multimedia "Floydian" spectacle eschewed poaching Floyd/Gilmour production assets and imagery, relying instead on visuals created by acclaimed LD Hans Shoop (Blondie, Todd Rundgren) and quadraphonic sound design and special audio FX by The Duke of New York (producer of Paul Simon’s Graceland - The Remixes). Each show was live streamed, modernizing a page from Grateful Dead’s nihilist marketing playbook, making the performances available for free around the world for those unable to attend due to Covid concerns, or just unable to attend by being on the other side of the planet.

The Gilmour Project is Jeff Pevar (lead guitar - CSN, David Crosby/CPR, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, Phil Lesh & Friends, Ricki Lee Jones, Marc Cohn), Berry Oakley (bass/vocals - Allman Betts Band, North Mississippi All-Stars, Blue Floyd & The Doors), Mark Karan (guitar/vocals with Bob Weir, RatDog, The Other Ones, Dave Mason), Scott Guberman (keyboard/vocals - Phil Lesh & Friends, Keystone Revisited), and Angie Scarpa (drums - Black Sabbitch).

Hailed by The Washington Post as “one of Nashville’s finest song interpreters,” Kathy Mattea has enjoyed much success and acclaim during her 40-year career in Country, Bluegrass and Folk music, including 2 Grammy wins, 4 CMA Awards, 4 #1 country singles, and five gold albums (plus a platinum Greatest Hits collection). Her latest album is Pretty Bird, produced by her old friend, roots music wizard Tim O’Brien. The wide-ranging collection of songs chronicles a period of rededication to singing, digging back in with a vocal coach and emerging with a poignant and eclectic CD. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Explore the depths of Americana ‘one trippy tune at a time’ with upstate New York’s Slambovian Circus of Dreams. Voted Chronogram Magazine’s “Best Band of 2022” for their rootsy rockin’ psychedelia, the Slambovians’ deep connection with audiences and exciting live shows are legendary. Dylan, Bowie, Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett and The Waterboys may flavor the musical mix, but the Slambovians’ musicianship and songwriting stand on its own.

With vocals “soothing and bewitching as a snake oil tonic,” the resident shaman of Slambovia, lead singer Joziah Longo, is joined onstage by bandmates Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, mandolin, flute) and the brilliant guitar-slinging and mandolin-playing skills of Sharkey McEwen, creating a show that constantly evolves “with a little help from their friends,” — RJ McCarty (keys, bass, sax), Bob Torsello (bass), and Matthew Abourezk (drums).

Woodstock-tinged psychedelia, a hint of southern rock and solid songwriting elevates this version of Americana to new heights. The band’s latest studio release, A Very Unusual Head is considered to be "their finest work to date," according to the UK’s Rock’n’Reel Magazine. Recorded over four years in five studios and two countries, A Very Unusual Head is a kaleidoscope of songs. Opening their creative tent to notable performer friends: fellow New Yorker Dar Williams, Anthony Thistlethwaite (The Waterboys), and Kolson Pickard (producer Tall Heights, Pico Romanesque), the songs and musical escapades of the band make for a sonically beautiful, creative and adventurous album. Inspired by the surrealist painters and Dylan growing up in Philadelphia, Longo chronicles a bit of that journey honoring those who offer an intellectual/creative escape hatch needed to sort life’s big questions.
